Gave the bottom vents a little inspection, and I noticed that the fan has accumulated some dust over the years. I know how to open the bottom up, and I have ordered some plastic spudgers that are on the way to my house. How do I clean the CPU fan?

You can use the spudgers (just learned a new word) to open the back cover only after removing the 11 Phillips-head screws, but to clean the fan use only a soft cosmetics brush, nothing hard, no liquids/lubricants and no compressed air/vacuum cleaner. First make sure the latop is shut down and not suspended in sleep, Fast Startup or hibernate mode, disconnect the battery and press the power button for 10 seconds. Best to disconnect the fan plug and remove he fan to access and clean the duct grill/vent outlet, there will be a lot of lint and dirt accumulated in the grill after 2 years. Note, the back cover Philips screws are locked with a blue or brown locking compound (glue) so take care not to strip the screw heads as it may take some force, likewise don't tighten the screws too much as the small brass thread inserts at the bottom may break loose rendering the screw useless. So, the laptop CPU fan cleaning process is as follows:-

    1. Make sure your laptop is turned off and unplugged.
    2. Next, unscrew the bottom panel from your laptop and remove it.
    3. Remove fan and hold ribs in place with fingers.
    4. Now use compressed air, a USB vacuum cleaner, or gently blow out fans to remove dust.
    5. If there is dirt inside the laptop, remove it using the methods described above.

As an extra precaution, you can remove the battery from the laptop.

How to clean a laptop fan with compressed air:-

If you do not want to remove the fan, the compressed air works by itself.

    • Turn off and unplug the laptop from the mains.
    • Remove the bottom panel from your laptop. You can also remove the battery at this point.
    • Spray compressed air onto the fan in short bursts. It is best to spray towards the air vent to keep dust from escaping from the computer.
    • Once the dust has completely disappeared, screw the panel back onto the laptop.

Note that this should only be done if there is a small amount of dust in the laptop fans, as compressed air can clog them even more.
