Monitor Not working & my laptop defaults to monitor for no sound with Aspire 5 Slim Laptop

I bought a new monitor and although it has speakers and my laptop defaults to the monitor for sound, NO SOUND. I thought it was the monitor, so I returned it, after Microsoft remote logged in to check all settings and could not get it fixed. Based on their recommendation, I needed a new monitor. I promptly went out and bought a new monitor. Same issue. Laptop defaults to the monitor as sound output, no sound comes out. When I manually change to laptop, there is sound. What am I and Microsoft doing wrong?

You don't mention your laptop model, it could be the HDMI cable/port not being compatible, try a VGA cable if your laptop has a VGA port, if the monitor does not have VGA get a HDMI-VGA cable.
