Check BIOS Information tab to see if HDD1 is still connected.

Then it's either not connected or has died. Did you perhaps disconnect it when you were in there earlier. I think we discussed doing that at some point so as  not to confuse matters.

Took back off and connection looked ok. Put back and its now appearing in bios..and now listed in Device Manager as Satafirm 11. But not appearing as a drive in Explorer. Makes me a bit twitchy about using the laptop and losing stuff again

Used Disk Manager and initialising it now. So hopefully sorted - but am reluctant to use for fear of it doing same again. Could the bad connection on SSD card caused probs with the emmc?

Spoke to soon got error message when initialising - request could not be performed because of an i/o device error

Heh-heh. Can't just look at. Maybe you justled them a bit just opening the bottom cover and they worked intermittently for a while. You  actually gotta pull the ribbon connector off the mainboard. Remove 4 screws. And lift the drive out. Then re-seat the connector on the back of the drive a half dozen or so times to help tidy up the contacts just in case they're a bit diry or corroded. Also on the mainboard connector. Unplug the charger and disconnect the battery from the mainboard before attempting any of this stuff.

Did that. Tried then to initialise and came up with i/o error. I am thinking that time to cut losses and replace.
