How to Fix a Blank/Black screen when I open the Laptop Lid? - Aspire 5 A515-56

Hi, so I have an Aspire 5 and I recently updated the graphics driver from Intel as they said there was an update (which I needed to fix a gaming issue). They did warn me it would overwrite any customizations by the OEM, and I took that into consideration when updating. However, a new problem has occurred where whenever I close the lid and come back to open it, the screen does not wake up. When I press a key the keyboard lights up but the screen does nothing. I've already gone into the Control Panel and changed the lid settings to Do Nothing when closed, but that hasn't worked. I'm confused about what the problem may be. Would love any possible fix, thank you.

Try pressing FN+F6. As an aside, what gaming issue did you try to fix with the generic GPU driver?  You may have to temporarily put up with this annoyance if the gaming issue was significant and not resolvable by the latest ACER driver.

The gaming issue was for an old 3d-ish game where periodically the entire computer screen would freeze then the mouse and sound would freeze and go silent. Then the screen would turn black for about 5 seconds and it would flashback on and the game would continue. Sometimes a hard crash would occur where the game application would just close itself. So I had checked acer's website for any GPU updates but there wasn't any. So I checked the Intel Interface and they claimed there was an update. So after reading their warning I updated the GPU and that seemed to fix the game issue. But now it's caused this "not waking up when I press any keys". I've tried the FN +F6/F5/F1 and got no response :(. Still had to shut down the laptop and restart it. But I'm worried this may cause damage to the battery or drivers if I keep doing that.

I just tried checking device manager for the Power Management option for the keyboard but there isn't a tab for it. And when I try to use it from the Administrative Command Prompt, I get told I do not have permission to enable or disable device wake. Now I'm really stuck and have no idea what to do.

Don't worry about any hardware damage from shutting down, restarting. This is merely an annoyance. Drivers are software that can be replaced. What's the full A5 model number? For example A515-54G?  There are dozens of A5 models

My apologies, It's an Aspire A515-56! I was wondering if I should download any of the updates from the Acer updates page and see if that may hold a fix? I tried looking in the BIOS and didn't see an option for Power Management (I don't think).

    (1) What old 3d-ish game? Open Control Panel. Search 'restore point'.

    (2) Click 'create a restore point' in left pane. If System Protection was turned on, click System Restore button. Click next. Do you see multiple auto restore points with date/time stamps that approximately coincide with when you first noticed the issue with the generic driver?

    1. Celestia luna Online.
    2. Following these steps, all that is there is a manual backup restore point I made before updating the GPU driver.

    Hi Incatasia,

    Try to do power drain,

    1. Shutdown the unit.
    2. Unplug the cables connected to the unit.
    3. At bottom of the unit there will be a small tiny pin hole with a battery symbol close to it. Take a pin or a paper clip insert into it you feels like pressing a button hold it for 20-30 seconds.

To update, I did as you suggested, and sadly there are no changes :(. I think I'll just chalk it up to a bad update and not close the lid as often as I tend to.

Temporarily ignoring the apparent game issue, is the lid problem fixed by selecting that restore point?

I tried to avoid having to use the restore point, but I guess I may have to if I want it fixed. I haven't tried the restore point yet (saving it as a last effort).

The old game software vs new Win10 operating system may be an incompatiblity issue that results in the side effect! It may not be fixable if the game software developers don't  update the game to play nice with Win10. The best way to rule out a hardware issue is to use the restore point before Win10 automatically deletes it. If the side effect disappears, then we can reasonably assume it's an old-ish software issue. Then you can decide if you want put up with the side effect of the generic Intel driver by re-installing it in order to play the old-ish game---or not.

I also have an Aspire 515-56. I also updated the graphics driver to the latest from Intel, not because of gaming, but because occasionally full-screen videos would glitch, go black, or crash the laptop. Since updating, none of that has happened, but I now have the exact same problem as OP. If I let the laptop go to sleep, I have to do a hard reset as the screen is black and unresponsive. The keyboard light is on, the fan is going, but it won't do anything until I hold the power button down for 15 seconds and restart.

Thanks for your report. But give it some time. A random video under the right conditions will likely do it again.  Using generic instead of OEM drivers  to address intermittent or unpredictable issues like this often trades them for another set of issues due to proprietary mainboards. Sometimes a major Win10 update will eventually fix the issue but then introduce other glitches that hopefully aren't as annoying. Such is the nature of the new and unimproved  rapidfire Windows update policies.

Also, just like DrShrinker, those are my similar symptoms. Everything else is awake and working fine except the unresponsive and unwoken screen. It's not too big of a problem in general, but sometimes I take pauses when writing papers and such and wish to close the screen. Not have to shut down the entire laptop by holding the power button :( . This sucks but thank you everyone for the advice.

How are you saving the restore point? Cuz Win10 will autodelete it when it needs restore point disk space for new update restore points. Usually only a few weeks. Then it's gone. You can easily go back to the generic drive but no so easily use the restore point if it's deleted.

I'm sorry, that was probably a bad word choice. I haven't physically saved it but I just have it there. Would it be safe to use the restore point to go back? I did see it mention Programs that might be affected if I do go back, so I'm worried about that causing other issues.

Sorry. It's the only way to rule out (or rule in) a hardware issue at this point. It  merely says the Intel software may need to be re-installed.  If this software restoration worries you more than a possible hardware problem, then don't do it.

When I performed the System Restore, I received this error message. Skype and Cortana couldn't be opened.

Also, it didn't work in remedying the wake issue. When I closed it, the screen shut off, when I opened it, it stayed black and nothing woke it up.

Do you have a non-Microsoft  antivirus program running? Jack E/NJ
