Acer 7550 Battery discharge starts mysteriously while power is applied.

I left a new entry on a 2018 topic related to my difficulty, and cannot find it, and I am concerned that no one has seen it. Related to an Acer 7550 Blinking Power Lights. Should I ask a new question instead? Thanks. Stay well.

    b) disconnect the power adapter;
    c) disconnect the battery;

    Hi @HinckleyBob

    Most of the time charging light blinking when laptop battery need to replace condition.

    Before that please check your charger is suitable or support to battery it may be voltage issue.

    If you check above and if battery and charger are good in condition then remove and insert battery once.

    If again blinking issue occur then it might be board issue.kindly contact your laptop customer service for repairing.

    Thank you egydiocoelho and LunaAdmirer. I pressed the power button for 60 seconds with power and battery removed, but that did not correct the problem. I have ordered a 19v 120W power supply, so will deal with it when that shows up. Meanwhile, a shutdown, remove and replace the power connector, appears to charge the battery. If the power supply doesn't fix the problem, I will replace the MB (I have built a couple of computers from components, so replacing the MB should be something I can handle especially with help like you guys available!)

    I did find the thread (in my Chrome history) that I posted to, https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/543688/my-acer-laptop-power-led-is-blinking-and-disconnects-from-charging. I was finally to get the system to accept the post which it refused to do yesterday. But there, I posted the readings of the voltage as instructed to the prior poster (in 2018).

    Thank you again!

    Thank you egydiocoelho for the reply. Yes, the laptop performs better than new since I replaced the HD with an SSD, and bumped the memory to 12Gb. When the battery is fully charged, plug it into house power, the battery charges as expected and the machine performs perfectly for about 10 minutes. Then both battery and power lights blink, and in about 1/2 hour, I get the 20% low battery warning. After shutting down, both battery and power lights continue to blink. Unplugging from house power and then plugging back it resumes the battery light steady, as expected.

    I am thinking the power supply is failing because I upgraded the laptop, since it is a 65W version. So I think I wore it out since I assume it has a rectifier in it that limits its lifetime under excessive load although I am unable to determine if the power supply output is 19v AC or DC.

    Were you able to read my original post at community.acer.com/en/discussion/543688/?

    Thank you again, stay well,

    Replacing the power supply with a 120W version did NOT fix the problem. Any suggestions regarding the next step? Stay well, than you,

    The 120W is overkill for your model, which came with the 65W supply, but that shouldn't hurt anything. When you replaced the battery did you stick with the stock 6 cell or upgrade to the 9 cell? It sure sounds like the battery is acting up.

    Thank you for responding billsey. 6 cell. I used the 120W supply because I already upgraded the memory, and intend to replace the processor with an I7 if I can get it to run on AC power again. The cost of 65-120W supplies were all the same.

    Do you think running it without a battery could verify the battery is the culprit?

    The 8/31 post above notes 8% wear on the battery. Running without the battery causes shut down after a few minutes, so the battery helps it keep running even though the battery and power lights are blinking, and charging has ceased. The battery resumes charging after power shutdown, but only after remove and replace the power connector.

    Both devices were uninstalled and reinstalled normally on reboot. Drivers are dated 2006. Event logs below. Blinking battery and power lights, and charging failure remain. Next?

    That video is reasonably good but is old enough that it's a Windows 7 version. There are a couple of caveats to take with it. When the system is out of calibration in Windows 10 a full charge is often indicated by 98%, or 73%, or whatever so you can't use 100% charge level until after calibration. In addition you no longer want to discharge to 0%, the new batteries will shut off permanently if you ever to get to that level, you typically discharge to 3% so you need to make sure your plan is using a number like 3% or 5% as the critical point.

    Thank you billsey for the caution. Fortunately, my battery did completely recharge (didn't see your email before the discharge was over).

    After recharging the battery, showing 99% at boot, the discharge now starts immediately. Before now, a full change would not start discharge for several minutes (~30 min).

    Here is a new hwinfo64 display.

    Note that Windows has a different sense of discharge %, or if it is significant.

    Not sure why the difference! Power plan restored to "Balanced."

    Thank you, stay well.
