OK i am extremely sorry for such a big post with lot of questions.  :#
If you wanna skip to the question go to the section with this symbol ************ allover ************

I am new in this area after alot of savings, lot of reviews searching for day i found my best budget companion Acer Aspire 3 A315-53G-5968(NX.H1ASI.003).
My first buy on acer product and i am impressed by the quality.

NOW COMING TO MATTER

My device specs are
  • Intel Core i5-8250U (8th Gen)
  • NVIDIA Geforce MX130 (2 GB)
  • 8 GB DDR4 RAM (1x4 - integrated to motherboard, 1x4 in single slot)
  • 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD (very slow  :'(  )
My desired upgrade
  • 20 GB RAM (1x4 - integrated to motherboard, 1x16 in single slot)
  • 250/500 GB M.2 2280 SSD (hidden port if available  :p )
My reviews and finding

So i did went into deep research on my device formfactor, hardware and motherboard. i were able to find these info
Mainboard Name: KBL Metapod_KL
SATA III : HDD Western Digital - WD10SPZX-21Z10T0 link ->( https://www.amazon.in/BlueTM-Mobile-Hard-Drive-1TB/dp/B071F9MLJJ )
RAM : slot #1 - Integrated -> Micron Technology Inc. -  MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1 link ->( https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/micron-technology-inc/MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1/557-1769-ND/6024231 )
slot #2 - Replacable -> Skhynix - HMA851S6AFR6NUH link ->( https://www.skhynix.com/products.view.do?vseq=2062&cseq=75 )

Dual channel ram are clocked at 2400mhz  at timing 17-17-17-39 lowest ram settings ( i have attached both ram data sheet for review)
slot 1 integrated ram goes upto max speed 2400 mhz @ timing 17-18 (very bad acer gave ddr4 no use cant put a speedy ram) then the slot 2 having ram max speed upto 2400mhz @ 17

******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Now my doubts and questions.

Does my model ie. Acer Aspire 3 A315 53G 5968 have hidden M.2 PCIe SSD slot?
if yes is it NVMe or Sata III PCIe ?
If my device is not supported why?
in acer community i found one op mentioned all Acer A315 53G MoBo are same they have PCIe slot and the maximum capacity is 256gb with official SSD support of LIT-ON SSD 225gb (attached image of supported ssd ).  also saw in more than one community questions mentioning 512 GB SSD is supported ( https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/570566/acer-swift-1-compatible-m-2-2280-ssds ).
Please let me know if my device have a slot for SSD i am so concerned  about it.

Now ram

What is the maximum allowed ram upgrade ? 16 gb on empty slot is possible ?
https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/571433/expandable-ram-issues-in-aspire-3-a315-53g-5968 )
if it is supported will flex memory will be activated ? CPU i5-8250u support flex memory.
so if flex memory is supported 1x4 + 1x4 dual channel with remaining 12 gb will act as single channel?
since maximum speed of integrated ram is 2400 mhz @ 17-18 any use in installing a lot faster same timing ram ? will it be underclocked?

Main doubt even if flex memory is working or not from intel, what will happen if i put 4+16gb ram any perfomance issue since it is such a bigger ram upgrade.

Main note : i need a huge ram since i have alot of ram hungry apps waiting in factory to be worked with, next one upgrading will cause you around a good money why you didnt choose anything more better? actually i bought this product at a stealing price and i am not upgrading all at once, bi monthly may be.

Thanks for your time. Please reply and help.

i bought the same model recently for my daughter from flipkart.
as is my habit, before even switching it on i opened it to check out the motherboard and components it used.

    1) Ram: 4gb is soldered and you can put in another 16gb  for a total of 20gb.
2400mhz is the speed of the soldered ram at CL 17. i put in a 8gb 2666mhz , ADATA ram, which i had lying as spare. it works at 2400mhz in the mb , obviously.
    2) m.2 slot: it has a m.2 ssd slot. whic i suspect might take in a pcie x1 speed pci-e  ssd. but i would very strongly suggest a nvme SATA ssd. the difference in speed of pcie and sata is very negligience in this mother board. i had put in a XPG 6000 lite pciex4 speed in this but it did not work. it was recognised but windows could not be installed. gave a critical stop error.
so eventually i settled on a 2242 size sata ssd which also i had as spare. it is Kingspec brand and available on aliexpress.com at ₹2100/- for 240 gb model. it has quite good read / write speeds of 550/500 in crystal disk mark.

    3) Screen: it has a pathetic fhd screen. i changed to an IPS , fhd screen for approx ₹5500/-

    4) wifi: my unit had a atheros wifi card, but since i like intel wifi wifi cards i changed it to intel 9260 wifi card. cost me ₹950/-

    5) keyboard: nothing is wrong with the keyboard, but i have ordered a backlit keyboard for it for ₹1150/- from aliexpress.

@Deejay_tech Hi sir thanks for replying, i do have few doubts if you have time for,

    1. Ram 4+16 Gb how it gonna work as flex memory mode? [flex setting 1x4 + 1x4 as dual channel remaining 12 Gb(16-4)  will act as single channel] . can you explain a bit on 4+16 Gb compatibility issue ?

2.Thanks for the confirmation on M.2 slot. i checked in HWiNFO64 if i can find port information and i find all PCIe slot are connected  :'(

can you check and let me know if i have a empty slot ?
The highlighted slot have my graphics card connected, however i doubt about its reliability. Since for GPU they need PCIe x16 slot right ?
and NVIDIA Gefore MX130 is a square chip right ?
    i am confused  :s

    3. My Monitor Name is BOE CQ NT156FHM-N41 is 45% NTSC color gamut but i didn't find any big issue on that however i found that sometimes screen feel blurry and on batter lowest brightness display flickers when goes into very white concentrated screen, ac connected no such problem

    4. WiFi connection is pretty stable with Atheros, my WiFi connection is 100 Mbps but in speed test i used to get 70-80 according to buffer size with ping 8 ms
will there be any change in speed if i change to Intel?

    5. keyboard makes me mad as you said i wanna try a back-light keyboard may i know the device number or something i can track it down?
This fn key is real headache as well, no way we can stop it being used it for other things than it was really intended to do

Thanks in advance for your efforts and time.

    1) ram: i doubt 4 +16 will work as dual channel. it will not have the smoothness of two 4 + 4 rams.

2)m.2 slot: as i said you will not find much of a difference in speed between a nvme sata and nvme pcie ssd. go for a higher capacity m.2 sata drive at the same price.
since my laptop does not have any external gpu i cannot comment upon it.

    4) wifi: norhing wrong with atheros 433 Mbit card. its just that i have intel 9560 /intel 9260 cards in all my other laptops, so for convinience i changed it.

5)kb: since i bought it for my daughter for her studies. hence prefer backlit for night time.

ps: i have an acer predator Ph315-51 gaming laptop. it uses fairly good components. i want to upgrade all my budget laptop to that level.

@Deejay_tech thanks for your time help.
i do understand nvme sata and nvme PCIe ssd. actually i want my apps and OS to be fast and i cant compromise on the data storage as well thats why i am checking if i have that hidden slot. If i need to upgrade my entire sata hdd to 1 tb sata 3 sdd it will cost a fortune compared to 256 or 512 and i will not be able to upgrade ram if i go above budget.
I am sorry to disappoint  you, still i am looking for the hidden slot is there or not, how much is the maximum 512 Gb or 256Gb.

PS. could you please check and let me know which is the back-lit keyboard you bought to upgrade the lap.

and an enthusiastic question can we replace the VGA webcam or it does need any extra changes with driver and bios related? The webcam is so pathetic

There is only 1 m.2 slot. no other hidden one.

and just to give you an example.
in my predator 300 gaming laptop i have put in the samsung 970 evo, which is considered one of the fastest ssd , the original which came with it was hynix sata ssd. in real life usage i do not find much difference in speed between the two. boot times are nearly the same as well loading of games etc ...
    anyways the choice is yours.

as regards the pathetic and unusable webcam, i am planning to get a better webcam from my friendly neighbourhood pc service centre. he has promised me one from acer aspire 5 series.
no drivers are needed, as it uses win 10 builtin drivers. its just plug & play.

@Deejay_tech i have checked it in all the forum available in the acer community for A315 53G motherboard they have 1 M.2 slot (no confirmation for all models) those have the port only supports the max speed of 6000Gbits this is it supports the speed of SATA III same as of HDD SATA III port. it doesnt matter if we install in M.2 slot or HDD sata slot all the SSD will be underclocked to max speed of SATA 3. That may be the reason your samsung 970 evo bottle necked at the same data speed of hynix.

Now maximum capacity support, per acer official test it supports upto 250GB (samsung 860 evo) 2280 is the best choice  (2280 better heat discipation and data transfer because of the length of chip)
in one forum one user was able to successfully install 512 GB ssd in m.2 slot, no other confirmation yet. As per op for this laptop the max is 250 GB however he mentoned it may support higher capacity
    https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/567805/ssd-m-2-capability-for-aspire-e-15-e5-575g-731b
some crucial and adata high capacity ssd not supported, for one user 860 evo 1TB was supported, i thinks its like luck or something

anyway i am concerned about if my model number has M.2 slot other than HDD sata port. since i have dedicated GPU card i am afraid if the used M.2 port to install it or something. if it is free i will try samsung 860 evo 500gb 2280 ssd. since NVME not supported.
i just want a confirmation by someone as GPU uses different port and i have an empty M.2 slot in my system  :p

no , i have installed the samsung 970 evo in acer predator helios 300. one of the better laptops from acer. it has full pcie x4 speed support.

in this Aspire A315-53 i have installed kingspec sata ssd. boot times on both the m/c are similar.

maybe you are correct when i go deep in researching on this i find myself wrong on several aspects, it s making me confused. There is no proper specification for my laptop in any acer website i checked all acer website for base varient the spec is simple for the last 4 digits 5986, 5968, 5920 for sinngle number change spec changes. Even then my device is listed in none of the acer offical websites (a315 53g 5968). No hardware info nothing.
when i search for motherboard KBL Metapod_KL  nothing is listed in google.

TOTALLY NO ONE KNOWS ACER ASPIRE 3 A31 53G 5968 EXIST, WHAT AND ALL SPEC, NO ONE KNOW NOTHING !!!

but assumption based on base variant a315 53g everyone preposing things even the OP. I started hating Acer for being such a shady company. No support at all. This was my first impresson and this will be my last too...

in conclusion: in India atleast acer sells sub standard hardware in the budget segment.
we have to spend a lot after buying it, to bring it upto a decent usage level.

for e.g. no ips screen, no ssd, no backlit keyboard, as it sells in other countries.

acer india  team must look into the matter. otherwise they will fail here.

ps: i am buying the next acer from amazon , US. much better config there at cheaper prices.

i paid  ₹30,490/- for my core i5, A315-53 model, in the recent flipkart sale.
must have spent ₹10,000 for ssd, screen, ram , backlit kb...etc..
now it is a very usable and fine machine.

what exactly is the issue you are facing @ VipuVPMV ?

    1. first of all i dont know my model number have m.2 slot or not
    2. second as per hwx64info it mentioned i have PCIex4 slot present i doubt if it is nvme
    3. third same hwx64info mentioning my dedicated 2gb graphics card is in PCIex4 slot i dont know how it is possible, there is no other empty slot available. so i doubt about there being any m.2 empty slot available
    4. even if graphics card have different port and i have free m.2 slot how much is the maximum ssd capacity accepted by samsung evo cards? 250 or 512
if it is confirmed i am good to go and buy ssd and upgrade

it has m.2 slot. i have put in a 250gb sata ssd in mine.
i suspect it will take 512gb sata or more. you can find out by trial & error.9

I also think there is a possibility that this model supports nvme as it uses the same motherboard as the a515-51 model.
yeah , even i think so. i have a aspire A315-53G model. i tried a Adata nvme pcie-4 speed ssd. it was recognised, and during the win10 install it even copied all the files from usb drive, but on reboot , when all the devices are installed, it gave a critical stop error. most probably i think the ssd itself was faulty.  ad it exhibited the same behaviour on the acer predator helios 300 laptop.

its just to be on the safe side i recommend nvme sata drive.
there is not much of a actual user experience between the m.2 nvme sata and m.2 nvme pcie ssd anyways.
only in very heavy data i/o throughput will it matter.

  • @Deejay_techIn this case, if the a315-53g model bios recognized ssd nvme, then I think it is compatible. Have you tried to update ssd firmware?

since it happened in 3 different Acer laptops, same Symptoms, i exchanged the ssd for a different brand.

As per op for this laptop the max is 250 GB however he mentoned it may support higher capacity

some crucial and adata high capacity ssd not supported, for one user 860 evo 1TB was supported, i thinks its like luck or something

anyway i am concerned about if my model number has M.2 slot other than HDD sata port. since i have dedicated GPU card i am afraid if the used M.2 port to install it or something. if it is free i will try samsung 860 evo 500gb 2280 ssd. since NVME not supported.
i just want a confirmation by someone as GPU uses different port and i have an empty M.2 slot in my system  :p
