You said in the first post >>>It's running Vista HP.>>>
Now you just said>>>WinVista mode? I think so>>>It did tell me Microsoft updated 3 or 4 of them near the bottom of the list.>>>

Is it running WinVista or not? Jack E/NJ

On startup ''Windows Vista Home Premium'' is displayed at the bottom. I only asked: WinVista? because you mentioned it in case it was different from Windows Home Premium. Sorry for the confusion I may have caused you.

    Thank you, Jack

OK. I was confused by your comment >>>It did tell me Microsoft updated 3 or 4 of them near the bottom of the list.>>>
Because Microsoft hasn't supported or updated VistaHP in years,  so I wondered how it updated them last fall?

So I'd like you to try this. Completely turn off the laptop. Remove the charger. Remove the battery. Then press and hold the power button for several minutes. Then re-insert the battery. Then plug the charger back in.

Then turn the machine back on and IMMEDIATELY start tapping the F2 key to enter the BIOS menu. Go to the BIOS Main tab and make sure the D2D option is enabled. Then press the F10 key to save the BIOS settings and exit. Then cross your fingers and hope VistaHP will start up and behave like it should.

Okay good enough, Jack I'll give it a try and get back to you later or tomorrow. Dinner time then watch the Baseball game.
Be advised I updated a few drivers 2 days ago not last Fall manually because as you stated Vista is no longer supported and when I check for updates it just keeps running and running. And also if we can get it running (which I think I can with your help) is downloading Windows 8.1 a possibility or is this machine too old and won't support 8.1?

Thank You again for your time I greatly appreciate it, Jack. Have a nice evening.

Actually Win7, Win8.1 & Win10 might all work. But Microsoft will charge a fee for activation since Vista machines aren't eligible for free upgrades. Jack E/NJ

Good evening Jack, I know you don't owe me anything and I appreciate your time helping me so I thought I would give you a follow up from the tests I ran last night.
I did the unplug charger and remove the battery hold the power off button down sequence test exactly as you suggested and it's the same. 2 notes on that, the D2D was enabled but the F12 Boot tab was disabled. I did enable the F12 in case I need it.

So I had time so I ran another: sfc /scannow test and it came back: Found some corrupt files but was unable to repair some of them. I can't run a: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restore Health on that machine the command prompt doesn't recognize it probably because of old Vista programming. I assume you know what a DISM repair is. I have used the SFC/DISM repair sequence in the past to repair other machines with success.

Next up I ran another: chkdsk/f/r/x and that came back with: No problems found. So I got conflicting test results for some reason or another. I also ran the winsock or winroot tests but those never seem to change anything.

I left the charger and battery out overnight but haven't powered it up today yet. I have nothing new to try.

I wanted to ask you your thoughts about the boot into F14 on startup that I saw online in a few repair articles. They said I can press ALT. and F14 on startup and get me into a screen with a: Reset This Computer, but I can't get into it. I was wondering if it was because Vista HP doesn't support this command.

Well, Jack thanks for your time and effort. If you get a chance let me know your thoughts if you might come up withing new in the meantime.

    Thank You
    John

    >>>They said I can press ALT and F14>>>
Nope. Last time I checked, 2 ALT keys but still no F14 key on ACER keyboards. On ACER keyboard the reset sequence is still ALT+F10 on startup as in the Win7HP video shown below which should be like WinVistaHP. Jack E/NJ

Hello Jack, and thanks for the prompt reply.
You're right it is F10, I don't know what I was thinking. It was F10 I tried upwards of 30 times and I can't get into that screen. I have seen that video along with several others very similar with no results. Is my machine too old? I can't read the sticker on the back but I think according to the books that came with it that it was made in 2007 or 2008.
Also, the video stated to make sure you have the AC power adapter plugged in which I did. Any idea why? And I wasn't online with it, do you think I need to put it online to get into that screen? None of the videos said you needed to be online to get that screen. I think that bothers me the most is I can't get into that screen, along with the browsers won't even open. Very mind-boggling, to say the least. I did see one video that said to open the back and remove the battery and let it sit overnight to reset it but that wasn't an Acer computer. Any thoughts on that?
Anything that comes to mind let me know.

    Thank You
    John

Sure. Remove the charger. Open the battery bay door. Disconnect the battery. Press and hold the power button for about a minute to discharge everything instead of letting it set overnight. Then let the thing set for about 15 minutes. Reconnect the battery. Put the bay door back on. Reconnect the charger. Cross your fingers. Then press the power button. And hope for the best. Hi Snoopcat,
Try putting your Windows 7 installation DVD into your DVD drive and when you turn on the machine begin tapping F!2. It should allow you to select booting from the DVD which will then wipe out your disk and install the Windows 7. Might be the easiest thing to do.
If the F12 doesn't work, try F8 instead.

Jack, I forgot to put in there ''the battery on the motherboard'' of course with the charger unplugged and main battery out. Sorry about that.

    topcat7736,
Wipeout my disk? I don't understand why I would want to ruin the disk. Please explain.

    Thank You.

A new installation will wipe everything off the disk and install the new operating system which is what you said you wanted to do.

Okay, nothing works. Why can't I get into or boot into these screens using F10 when everything online says I should? Any ideas guys?

    Thank you

Your machine is very old and the recovery partition for the alt F10 probably wasn't available back then. Ten years ago one would need to create an initial backup on a lot of CD's after purchasing a new machine. A message to do so would have originally appeared on the screen after booting the machine. But, of course, hardly anyone ever did the backup because they believed the machine would never have a problem and would last forever. Eventually a problem occurs and the recovery is gone forever.

topcat7736, I can understand that. Is there a way to create a restore point old enough to get it running again even with the original Vista HP? It just stopped working last Fall when I was trying to update it to Windows 7. The DVD drive won't run /read anything. I tried to run it and it keeps saying insert DVD even with one installed. I have a thumb drive stick that I can use on the desktop I'm using now. Is there something I can download online and then download it into the laptop I'm trying to repair?
What boot order should the system be listed in in the Bios menu? I may have screwed that up somewhere along the way.

Any help you and Jack can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You
    John
P.S. I'll be up. I don't know what time zone you're in so if you don't reply I'll understand.

You might have restore points on your hard disk unless you destroyed them last fall when doing the windows 7 install. When you turn the machine on, try a F8 and see if you get startup options and if one allows you to recover from a stored backup.

Well, guys, I don't know what I did or how I did it except for I ran it back to a restore point of 05-26-2019, yes 2019 is correct and it seemed to get online using the IE browser but it encountered another screwy problem. Something about: A problem displaying this webpage causing IE to refresh this page using compatibility settings. Or something along that line I can't remember what it said exactly.
So I tried to reset IE settings to default settings and that didn't help. Also, I tried to run another (sfc /scannow) test and it wouldn't run as it normally does. I got a bunch of long-winded junk I never seen before.

I've had enough for tonight and will be back at it tomorrow. I'm not a quitter and the machine is in perfect condition and I can't see disgarding it.

Thanks all for your help. Any updated suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You
    John

    Because it's ALT+F10. Not F10 alone. Jack E/NJ

Stop running all these SFC and other things. They aren't repairing your machine, just making it worse. There's no need to do them!

The compatibility problems are because you're running an out of date browser which can't be updated because of an out of date operating system. You can try going into the toolbar for IE and turning on compatibility mode. Modern browsers will probably not run under Vista.
