I can't reset my laptop. Acer ICK 70, 7720 series.  It's running Vista HP.  ALT. F10 doesn't work. I can't open any browsers and it won't read disks. I've tried every test in Command prompt ADMIN, and nothing helps. What Now?
Thanks

I would say at least 40 - 50 times during the last week running all the other tests. It's not that simple. I can't even open Chrome or Firefox any longer. My problem is much deeper than a forced shutdown. That's why it's been a week of running everything possible.

    Thank You.

Yes. But why would that prevent Chrome or Firefox from opening up? Also, why would it prevent booting into the repair computer on startup holding Alt. and F10 during startup?
    Ive run:
sfc /scannow Found corrupt files some couldn't be repaired during that process. Vista wont allow a DISM repair after that.
chkdsk/f/r/x came back all were good. And several other tests using the command prompt and nothing.
I'm no rookie. I've repaired many computers easily but this is older 2008-02009 It looks like.

    Thank You
  • Can you inform the first ten numbers of the partnumber? On the alt + f10 command, or the Acer recovery partition has been deleted, or the d2drecovery function is disabled on the bios. Have you already activated the d2drecovery function?

There are no 10 numbers on the F10 command as I stated twice already It won't boot into it. I can't get to the start windows normally or boot in safe mode but the repair this computer line doesn't come as it says it should on a few online sites.
The rest of the stuff you lost me on. I can't get into those screens.

All drivers have been checked for updates on the device manager page.

I want to do a total reset and install windows 8.1 or at least windows 7. I hate Vista HP it's outdated and not supported any longer.

Any idea why I can't just wipe it out and start fresh?

    Thank You

In this case, you can use an iso x86 or x64 from windows 7 or vista and put the iso inside a pendrive! I can help you how to install correctly, but you should first download the iso of windows 7 or vista!

I have stated I cannot open up any browsers so how can I download anything? I have a windows 7 disk but it won't run or read or play any disks. Something is totally screwed up with this machine. It's not like anything I've ever seen before.
I need to do a total reset. Every online repair video suggests that I do the Alt. F10 but that must be for windows 10 and not Vista HP.

Can anybody tell me how to wipe it clean? A factory reset is what I need.

    Thank You

    Hi Snoopcat,

    I know you're frustrated.

If you have a real Windows 7 installation CD/DVD and your machine can't read it then you might have a memory problem or you're trying to read a DVD on a CD drive. If you must reinstall Vista, then you'll need to go to a friend and use his/her computer to download it and burn it to a CD or DVD for you. Before doing so, look at the front of your optical drive and see if it is a CD or DVD drive. A CD doesn't hold as much data as a DVD and the Windows 7 may be on a DVD and thus be unreadable by your machine. A Windows 7 install DVD will boot up by itself and install itself without your needing to do any "factory " resets. But if the memory is defective or the wrong optical drive is being used, then the software will not work.

Vista can be obtained from here for free: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13858/windows-vista-service-pack-2-install

As it's a Vista machine, it's going to be old and have antiquated hardware. Don't spend any money on it. (ie memory, optical drives)

You can get a more modern factory refurbished computer through Amazon or Microcenter and not have any old hardware & operating system problems.

    >>>stuck on desktop>>>
If you can get to the elevated command prompt, then it's not really stuck on the desktop. With nothing in the CD tray or nothing attached to any ports except a mouse, enter 'diskpart' at the command prompt. At the diskpart> prompt enter 'list disk'. Then enter 'select disk 0'. Then enter 'list volume'. What is the result? Jack E/NJ

He considers the desktop to be everywhere until the operating system boots. The hardware is old and he can't get a 7 DVD to boot on a CD drive. In Vista days one only needed a R/W CD drive to do everything. That changed with Windows 7.

Doesn't matter as long as he can get to the command prompt to run diskpart. He said >>>I've tried every test in Command prompt ADMIN, and nothing helps>>>

OK. That's what I'm looking for. Now enter the following two DISKPART commands and tell me the result of the 2nd command. Jack E/NJ

DISKPART> Select disk 0 (should say disk 0 selected)
    DISKPART> List volume

Sorry but no, Jack. My phone is older and doesn't do pictures. Also, I just noticed I ran these commands in safe mode if that will make any difference.

    Thank You, Jack.

Can you boot into normal WinVIsta mode? Don't worry about not loading the browser or reading disks. Jack E/NJ

WinVista mode? I think so, Jack. I get to the desktop with icons and cannot get Chrome or Firefox to open at all even when I have my ethernet cable plugged into it and it gets online. I manually updated all drivers on the device manager page 2 days ago. It did tell me Microsoft updated 3 or 4 of them near the bottom of the list.
I was using the laptop fine and one day back around November it just stopped opening browsers for some reason. I really would like to clear the whole thing out and install Windows 8.1 but I don't know if it can accept and download 8.1. I have no files or photos in it and would like to reset it totally. If it can't handle 8.1 Windows 7 I think would be better I think.
Be advised if you're busy we can get back to this at another time as I have my desktop to use like I am now. Also if I don't get back to you in a reasonable time frame don't wait as I may lose my wifi signal from my neighbor. I'm poor and disabled and cannot afford my own. Sorry about that.

So now what? I appreciate your time very much Jack. Thank You.
