Just did that. Intel RST v14.8.16.1063 WILL [loop] BSOD your system on this laptop. Had to reinstall windows again...

There is no fast booting option in BIOS for this model. Clearly you have never seen the boot options for this model. Only option available [related … sort of …] is to disable the very annoying animation and sound at the startup [it should be disabled by default ACER … it's very annoying]

  • OK! But there is the option to disable quick startup in the power options:

When the notebook freezes, does an error code appear?

Thank you for your help egydiocoelho. For the time being I will await for a new BIOS release to fix this issue. I'm tired of BSOD's and of reinstalling windows

When windows freezes, no error code appears, mouse is moving on the screen but apart from that nothing else work. no keyboard, nothing. After like a minute or so, the "smiley" face of windows new BSOD appears and the stop code is MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION

As iRST didn't work, I wonder if creating a stripped volume will work. I think it isn't quite the same as raid 0, but it will still create a 2tb stripped volume out of the 2 1TB drives.

Connect the USB installation media and boot from it while the 2 drives are connected. Open command prompt and input the following commands:

    diskpart
list disk (the two disks will be most likely named disk 0 and disk 1)
select disk n(n is the number of the disk)
    convert dynamic

convert both drives to dynamic and the input this command

    create volume stripe size=N disk=n,n,n...

The whole size=N part can be ignored and diskpart will automatically create a volume with lowest drive size multiplied by 2. Therefore 1TBx2=2TB. N=the storage amount in MB. small n is the disks you want to use to create a stripped volume. Maybe doing this will work.

    If it doesn't work perform:

    disk part
    list disk
    select disk n
    clean all

If after formatting the disk it is still set to dynamic input the following command on each disk:

    select disk n
    convert basic

    Hopefully, that helps.

I managed to stripe both drives and during windows install process it did show 2 drives with aprox 2TB each. Then a message saying windows cannot be installed on a dynamic disk [honestly did not knew that]. Of course after that the laptop would not boot, was stuck again on black or logo screen. I had to take out one by one the SSD, low level format them and install windows on one of them.

After that I tried to add the second SSD while having already the windows installed on the first one. After several unsuccessful boot sequences, I managed to again go to the command prompt on the USB Windows installation disk. I made both drives dynamic again but when I tried to stripe them I got an error related to the size. I didn't even tried to toy by lowering the size with the size= option. I mean, what's the point of having a drive if you cannot use it at full capacity?

We are talking and experimenting and so on but nothing works in the end …

It's a RAID 0 only BIOS, then it should see only one 2 TB drive. PERIOD !!!

So no more experiments. ACER please come with a solution or came clean about this overpriced piece of ...

I have never tried to install windows on a dynamic drive, but I never expected it wouldn't work.

I am curious, the iRST that you downloaded, was it from Intel's driver page or Acer's?

Even if the BIOS is set to RAID, it should still be able to read the 2 SSDs, as individual drives and the system should not crash when the 2 drives are installed. There is definitely some bug going on with the BIOS.

When the BIOS is set to RAID it doesn't mean it should see the 2 drives as one. Setting the SATA mode to RAID allows you to create a RAID 0,1,5,6 or 10 array from the iRST, which in your case crashes for unknown reason(most likely related to the bugged BIOS).

Maybe the generic iRST isn't incompatible with the laptop, so maybe the one from Acer's might work:

it is located in the driver section 'SATA AHCI Driver'.

in BIOS the drives are read as individual 1 TB drives, I wanted to say that during the windows installation process the user should see only one 2 TB drive [for example 2 256GB NVMe are seen in BIOS as 2 individual drives but when you install windows, they are seen by the install process as one 512 GB single drive] I was expecting the same for the 1TB drives.

even so, lets leave apart the fact that they are not seen as a single 2TB drive, and the RAID does not work, I was expecting to at least function properly as single individual drives, I was definitely not expecting the "friendly" BSOD, or the laptop to freeze even at power on … come on

It's definitely a BIOS issue in my humble opinion. When I will have time and disposition for new "experiments" I will try to lower the BIOS version [if it will allow it] to see if that solves anything

The reason why you see the 2 256GB drives as a single 512GB partition is because they are already in RAID 0. Re-installing windows doesn't break the array and this is why you see the drives as a single 512GB, whereas the new 1 TB drives are not configured in RAID and you won't see them as a single 2TB,  windows is installed and the drives are configured in RAID 0 from iRST.

Version 15.2.13.1049 of IRST [official one from ACER] is working and does not BSOD the laptop. Tried to put both my WD in RAID 0 and it didn't work out as I hoped. Towards the end it gave an error and the computer froze again. I restarted it just to find out [I was kind of expecting that] that the system will no longer boot and when trying to reinstall windows no drives are recognized/seen. Same booting from a third party live DVD, the drives are no longer seen by any check or partition or format, tool, only in BIOS [in read only mode] ...

I was lucky to still have the original 2x256 GB SSD. Put them in and booted up.

Now, RAID option being locked in BIOS … I assume I will be needing an external M.2 NVME enclosure to reformat/factory default those WD, right?

Is there any other way? except using another laptop with m.2 slot or an external enclosure?

Just connect one of the 1TB by itself and re-format it.

I have no more ideas for how to make the 2 1TB drives to boot together.

Thank you ven98. Actually the solution is more of a pain in the … because even connecting one by one, and even if they are recognized in BIOS, they are not by seen  by Windows install or the other format/partition tools on the Live DVD [windows 10 clone] I use.

However I did found a solution. The idea was not mine but it does work. All you need to do is load in a batch file 2 drivers iaAHCIC.inf and iaStorAC.inf

Then the SSD's are again visible in any format/partition tool.

Question remains why the system failed during RAID 0 creation with IRST in the first place? Will try again tomorrow.

    Thanks for the support.

Even after that driver loading trick I cannot totally format/factory reset the drives so they are still not our of RAID therefore, I cannot reinstall anything on them.

    open to suggestions …

Have you tried booting with only 1 SSD connected?

I never asked, but the windows you are using is it created from a recovery drive or you downloaded from microsoft's webpage?
