Good news. I disabled secure boot as Supervisor and was able to fresh install Windows 10 on a USB stick with A Recovery Partition and EFI System partition, Then i could also update BIOS to latest version. The new 970 EVO has windows 10 and windows 7 is on a 850 EVO 2.5" drive.

Driver updates are fine because they are usually reversible and seldom risk bricking an otherwise functional machine. BIOS firmware updates however are quite different as they carry a substantially higher bricking risk, are usually irreversible, and thus should be avoided unless the machine has a significant problem that the firmware update is specifically designed to fix. You cannot boot Win7 in UEFI mode or from a GPT partitioned drive. Jack E/NJ

I'm in legacy and have successfully booted into both OS from legacy previously.

Yes Win7 and Win10 can only be dual booted in legacy, NOT UEFI, mode and on an MBR partitioned, NOT GPT, drive.

Please understand that Win7 can only be installed on an MBR drive in legacy mode. Win10 can be installed on either GPT drive in UEFI mode or MBR drive in legacy mode. So in order to dual boot Win10 with Win7, Win10 must be installed on MBR drive in legacy mode.
