Make sure volume 2 ESP FAT32 is still the e: drive. Then try entering this at the x:\windows\system32 subdirectory prompt.

    bcdboot x:\windows\system32  /s e: /f all /v

You said here in this link https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/584506/#Comment_584506

    >>>I tried you previous command bcdboot x:\windows /l en-us /v...here is what I got>>>

Arrgh! I completely missed that you were pointing to the x:\windows sub not x:\windows\system32 sub

    So lets try

    bcdboot x:\windows /s e: /f all /v

OK let's try it again with the /d /p parameters. I think it's almost there but one of the bcdboot default paths doesn't seem to exist (\\?\ globalroot...)

    bcdboot x:\windows /s e: /f all /v /d /p

    Hi Jack
Before your last response, I was trying various things.  There was a in c drive..there was Windows.old folder.  I renamed windows to sonething else and changed windows.old to windows.  Restarted nothing happened but reset worked.  I have been coping data from cmd last few days. So I decided to go ahead with the full reset and selected win8.1 which was what the machine came with. It worked. Did a full factory reset.

Would you recommend I keep the windows 8 or should I update to win10?

Thank you so much for all your help.

Congrats. A reset was gonna be the next suggestion because the boot files seemed to have been successfully copied despite that last element app device error message. I think you should  ***upgrade*** back to Win8.x because of Microsoft's new lifecycle and heavy-handed update policies for Win10 that are quite different from any previous Windows version. AFAIK, Win10 is a downgrade in many ways relative to Win8.x.

Each new major automatic Win10 update is like a new version of Windows with no real guarantees that even relatively new machines will function properly under it. Under the old Windows naming system, the latest major 1803 Win10update might as well be called Win15 since Win10's first release a few years ago. Furthermore, maintenance updates or support for each new major Win10 update typically end a year or so after it's released. Maintenance updates for Win8.x will continue into 2023 so you're likely better off staying with the original factory-installed Win8.x

When the computer restarts, I get an option for 8.1 or 10.  Is there a way to get rid of the w10 reference from the machine.

Are these install Win8.1 or Win10 options? Or boot Win8.1 or Win10 options? If the latter, seems like you've now got a dual boot machine!!! That may be a good thing --- or not. Screenshot of the options you see would be helpful. Jack E/NJ

It's boot option. I tried w10 but returns with error.  8.1 works fine. Not a big deal; Iwas able to set 8.1 as default and select min time (5sec). So it does load win 8.1 automatically after 5sec

Yup, nearly dual boot.  :) (1) What's the Win10 error message? (2) In Win8.1, press the WIN key + R. Enter diskmgmt.msc. Can you post of screenshot of the result?  Jack E/NJ

OK. Open devicemgmt.msc again. If you right click on Disk1 or the drive volume with a primary partition size of 22.36GB, can you assign letter D : to the drive? If yes, do so, exit and reboot. Then post another screenshot of devicemgmt.msc. Also does drive D : now show up in file explorer? Jack E/NJ

    Hi Jack
I only get the option to delete the volume.  There is an option to change drive letter and path but it's grayed out.
Is there a way to run diskmgmt as administrator?

Yes. Sorta. Open the command prompt as admin. Enter diskpart. At the diskpart prompt enter---

    (1) list disk
    (2) select disk 1
    (3) assign letter d :

Minimize, don't exit the diskpart window. If the above three diskpart entries seemed to be successful, does D : now show up in file explorer and/or diskmgmt.msc? Jack E/NJ
