The power button turns on the A114 fine, and will force a power off after 10 seconds, but it is not detected by Windows. It wont initiate a shutdown, sleep. All Windows updates have been done(running1709 build 16299.248 )

I think if you hold it for 1 second a window will pop up and you can choose a shut down option. There is a check box to do that automatically. The topic is on this page:

Go to power options(right click on battery icon and left click on power options)>choose what the power button does and select sleep or shutdown.Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
-Model number
-Part number(not required, but helpful)
-CPU
-GPU-Operating systemHelios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

Of course I tried that, ven98. otherwise I wouldn't know that it didn't work.0

Try going to device manager>system devices and uninstall ACPI power button, restart the laptop and windows will install the driver automatically. Also open command prompt(windows powershell) and run sfc/ scannow, this will scan and repair any corrupted files.

sfc found no inconsistencies. The driver uninstalls and reinstalls without issue, and says "the device is working properly." The sleep button seems to generate the appropriate events, but the power button still does nothing. I tried to see it with procmon but I don't know the name of the process to filter to.0

Hi,
Check whether the third option in this tutorial helps:https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/104886-disable-shut-down-restart-sleep-hibernate-windows-10-a.html

No joy brummyfan2. This seems to only affect the presence of the power options on the windows login screen.0

Did it ever work properly under Win10? If yes, how long ago? Jack E/NJ

No it never worked, Jack. Small update, Using procmon I can see events generated by the sleep key but I see nothing when I hit the power key.0

Have you tried to disable fast startup? This is a default Win10 setting but sometimes screws with normal sleep & hibernate functions. Jack E/NJ

At the moment, you seem to have an annoyance --- pushing the power button won't put the thing to sleep. I'll admit to using this feature several times a day on my machines. But if it didn't work after trying all that you tried already, I'd probably have it serviced if still under warranty. If not under warranty, I might very reluctantly try a UEFI update but only if it's a lot more than just an annoyance --- messing with the notoriously finicky UEFI pre-boot can brick a machine. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Jack E/NJ

I recommended this machine to a client before I got one and I will check with them and see if they have the same issue. I think it is likely it doesn't work on all of these machines. It is not enough of a problem for me to send the machine back. It would be nice if it worked. Maybe it will in some future update. It might amount to minus half a star on reviews, but I can live with it.0

oh, and I did do a bios update to 1.090

Prolly taking only one step up to v1.02 or maybe even 2 steps to v1.03 woulda been enough to fix it. Too late now.

to solve the problem: hold the power key for 3 seconds, then release it and wait for the dialog box to appear(may take another 3 seconds.) While I presume they did this to keep from accidentally powering down the computer, I think it is a bad solution. Holding the power key until the dialog appears will force the machine down. You have to know the secret of 3 seconds then release and wait. Even Fn-Power would be better.1
