will do - one thing I just remembered - how many partitions should be on a typical win 10 acer HD? I had three (should only be two right?)

getting back to the surgery - what should I see if a removed module is bad?

Your model should look something like the image below with the cover off. There should be two module slots. If you bought the machine with 8GB memory installed, you could have either only 1 slot filled with an 8GB module. Or 2 slots filled with 4GB modules each. Jack E/NJ

    looks like a 8GB

I might just sit tight and see if the mem (rec) stick will do the trick

On each side of the module, there should be two shiny metal tabs that you gently push away from the module with a finger from each hand. The module should release and pop up a bit. Then you should be able to pull to remove it from its angled slot on the mainboard. Jack E/NJ

not to sound like a dolt (because I dont want to break something) they swing out on either side?  It doesnt look like they pivot up

Did you see my reply about how many partitions I should have on a acer?  I had 3 before the crash - could it have been a bad win 10 update?

thank you again for all this help :)  I so much appreciate it - I really do

Yes, the tabs only swing out. They're attached to the mainboard so don't try to pivot them up. The module itself slightly pivots up. Gently lift and pull the module on the points where the tabs swung out from. It should come out of the slot on the mainboard.

The HDD should have one ACER recovery partition + one system reserved partition + one Windows partition = 3 partitions

Now when I do remove the module and re-boot the laptop up - what should I see and what shouldnt I see?

Well, I'd say first let it try to go thru the BIOS self test so that it records the memory change. If it fails to go any further, then do a complee power down by pressing and holding the power till it shuts off. Then  before you push the power button again, you're gonna press and hold the ALT key. Then, while still pressing the ALT key, push the power button to turn the machine back on --- then, while still pressing the ALT key, start tapping the F10 key till something good happens or you get a ntfs.sys page fault or some other error. Then report results. Jack E/NJ

e cover stick does not work - I almost instantly get the BSOD - I got a feeling the hard drive is faulty - the laptop is under warranty?  I would like to know what messing around with the DDRAM will do to fix this?
