can anyone explain to me what the difference is in using MBR or GPT partition?  In an acer win 10 laptop? Can you use both?

    Hi,
You can use either, for more info please read:https://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/

You know - I just looked at this (the diff tween MBR and GPT) today...
And now I'm sitting here and wndering how to get the bios to take MBR?

all I can do is screw around with rufus and the win 64 iso
I can get to the bios; even made my own pwd to adj settings there ie; secure boor; uefi blah blah

if any one else reads these threads - please as a word of advice - make a BU disk/chip
(I bought this acer in 10-2017) didnt think I would have to do that just yet

what If I plunk the $$$ down for a new OEM or retail version on win 10?  I got estimates from the computer shops around here and it's 100-150 and a friggin 3 day turn-around?

Would,,,,a bios tweak to tell the laptop to boot from the DVD with a brand new legal OS win 10 work?

you know what?  You have helped me light years from a week or two ago, thank you for the guidance on getting me to the 4th rung:)

I just dont want to take the laptop to a shop and they say I need a new HD - if I can get a new copy (legal) win 10 os and be on my way that would be super..

    A bird in the hand..

    Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, you can download a copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft and you already have Product key embedded in your BIOS, so the activation will be automatic.

Or, at this point, it might be easiest for you right now to get up and running again with an ACER Win10 eRecovery stick that is specific to your machine's SNID. Go here and enter your machine's SNID https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/  I think price is still around $20 for the stick.

However, on the outside chance your recovery partition is still intact, make sure the BIOS option for D2D recovery is enabled. Then, starting from a completely power off state, press & hold the ALT key --- then, while still pressing the ALT key, push the power button to turn the machine back on --- then, while still pressing the ALT key, start tapping the F10 key till something good happens or not. If not, order the recovery stick.

Google MBR vs GPT for all you ever want or don't want to know about these disk partitioning schemes. Basically, GPT allows more partitions on a disk than MBR.

I am sure my rec partition is toast - otherwise on the "preparing automatic repair" should have done something...

thank you for the schooling on the MBR vs GPT HD schemes - that really does help

Will do the recovery stick thing and see what that does...if I get this thing flying I will help on the helping side of this board for sure:)

Thanks to you both for the helping hand(s)

Tried the ALT+F10 thing that Jack suggested

the comp booted up and said "please wait"
Then after a min or two it came back with the unhappy face (BSOD) and the ntfs.sys failed "page fault in a non-paged area"

Well, if you google that ntfs.sys page fault error, it might mean a DRAM module is the problem. If both slots have modules, you might wanna check each module by itself. Jack E/NJ

how do I do that?  I've done surgery on comps already...
and I've googled the error but I can see other solutions

I am sure there is no virus on the comp
(no porn watching and no email accounts - no USB file stuff - only after the crash)

    will look into it

I did use rufus and the *.64 iso file  and once when I booted up I got to a windows screen (teal colored 4 windows) but that is as far as the boot got before looping back into the dots circling

Unscrew 3 panel screws on the bottom. DDR4 slots are D & E on this pix. Jack E/NJ

Ok - its apart..how do I test these mem modules?
    :)

First, remove one of them. Then try the ALT+F10 recovery method again to see if the same ntfw.sys error happens. If still no joy, replace the removed module and remove the other one. ALT+F10 again. If still no joy, switch slots with each module. Four combinations to try. Jack E/NJ
