You don't need to re-install windows 8.1 and then update.

you can do a clean windows 10 installation, since your PC is already authenticated on Microsoft servers.

    just follow these simple steps:

    1. download the iso file of microsoft windows 10 (x64) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
    2. download Rufus, plug an USB flash drive and set Rufus as on the home page screen:https://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US
    3. click on the little disk icon on Rufus and point to the downloaded iso file
    4. let Rufus copy the installation files on USB flash drive
    5. reboot your PC
    6. enter BIOS, disable LaunchCSM, check if F12 boot list is enabled and then press F10 to save and exit
    7. plug the USB flash drive, press F12 at next boot and choose the USB flash drive as bootable device
    8. once at language screen, press shift + F10 to open a command prompt then
      type diskpart
      type list disk
type sel disk x (x is the number of your main HDD, where you want to install windows 10)
type clean all (now have a rest, lunch, dinner or whatever you want, it will take some hours to wipe your HDD)
      type exit (once done)
    9. proceed with windows 10 installation and skip the product key request
    10. enjoy your windows 10 x64, UEFI installation

That might be the best solution, indeed. It might also solve the freezing problem.

Because I have more files on this PC than I have external storage I'll need to borrow an external HD first, so it will be next week when I'm going to do the clean install at the earliest. I do have an old laptop on Win 7 I can use in the meanwhile if I have questions while the PC is busy.

Thanks again for your time and help, it's greatly appreciated! If you have any suggestions in the meanwhile please fire away.

I got the external HD and copied all my files, so I'm ready to give it a go. Should I download and install the programs mentioned in Steps 1 & 2 on an USB stick, or on the PC itself?
