3 issues probably related
1.
Some USB drives that work OK on another windows computer do not show up in Windows Explorer or in list of devices to eject
But show up in Control Panel / Devices
2. See note at end of this post
New Crucial MX SSD Drive - in removable caddy
Same as 1 above, except it does show up in list of devices to eject
3. (Much more important to me)
Same SSD Drive
I used Windows Media Creation Tool (which has a restore Image option) and attempted to follow instructions in this video to restore an Image of the original laptop HDD - which successfully backed up an image to a desktop USB Western Digital drive (it does show up in My Computer / Explorer.)

But when I try to write to the new SSD (replacing the HDD in original slot) it tells me it cannot find a drive.

What have I done
Updated bios to 1.6
Updated chipset drivers
A note about 2
I am getting the same results when the SSD is in the caddy and connected to my desktop computer, though it has old USB 2.0, so there may be some issue with the new SSD caddy. Though this cannot be issue 3 - trying to replace my HDD with SSD

2 & 3 solved. Turns out the new Crucial drive needed
2 - Initialized
or
3 - cloned with the acronis clone tool that Crucial recommend
Nothing in the box or on the support link about either option0
