Check in the BIOS if there are any settings for touchpad, hold press F12 while booting. Then check if the touchpad is set to Advanced mode and chage it to basic, if that doesn't work I recommend to change it back to advanced.

@nel99 Manjaro 18.0 is out, I am on a Nitro 5 AN515-42 with a Ryzen 2500U and Vega, I had the same problems with Manjaro 17.1.7 (Kernel 4.15) but Manjaro 18.0 (Kernel 4.19.3) needed no special config .

It was most likely the BIOS 1.06, freezes like that happened to me while on windows (I didn't get to test ubuntu long enough to experience freezes before the laptop died while using windows 10). So you should be freeze free now, fingers crossed for Acer updating the BIOS so that we can load Ubuntu without special parameter.

@zypaza yeah after the you get windows back you would want to upgrade the BIOS via acer download page and then to 1.09 through windows devices manager, expand the firmware list and right click BIOS or whatever is in there and to check for update, windows should proceed to update to 1.09. There are very small chances that…

It might be windows trying to update the system or optimize some component, it wouldn't surprise me that while on power it runs these tasks, and then when the computer gets unplugged they get suspended to save battery power. If it is really persistent you can check the Task Manager and see what programs take the most CPU…

@zypaza Oh yes, do update the bios, mine is at 1.09, it was when I was on 1.06 that my laptop crashed randomly (while using windows) and couldn't even do a windows restore properly so I had to reinstall windows fresh. Acer lists BIOS 1.08 as the latest, however if you manually update the bios through windows device manager…

As mentioned above you can add an extra 8 gig of ram for a total of 16. If you use only 8 gigs the config with a Vega 8 will give you only 6.9 gig of ram for programs since 1.1 gig is reserved for the Vega 8, so if we count the ram windows occupies you might have around 4.3 free gigs for running programs. You can also…

The AN515-42 is my daily driver and TBH it had a lot of problems at the beginning, half of which have been addressed by updates, sadly it still has some (check more posts about the laptop), but if you can get it on sale (grabbed mine for 600$ on best buy) it does handle gaming quiet nicely for the price, processor might…

@zypaza Perhaps it could be the ubuntu power manager, I am not sure if theirs is different form Arch, you could try tinkering it or replace it with other managers. In the end there are two possibilities 1) A bug got patched in kernel 4.18.9; 2) The BIOS is bugged; or which is most likely the case 3) both 1 and 2. I am…

what argument did you use to make Ubuntu launch? The only way I got 18.04.1 to boot was to use pci=noacpi which stands for no Advanced Configuration and Power Interface which might be the reason why sleep doesn't work properly, it seems their BIOS is bugged since people report problems cause by battery issues, like random…

I haven't, either way both are still bugged and fresh install didn't make much of a difference, but your problems seems a lot more pronounced than mine, did you try changing your power settings to high performance? Other than that if you can't return the laptop we are gonna have to pressure acer into listening us...

Another option would be to manually check for driver updates on the device manager panel, since windows doesn't always update all the drivers, nor does acer since BIOS 1.09 as of today is not listed on their support page for this laptop, while the device manager let me upgrade to 1.09

Have the same laptop, what kind of stutters do you get? I have audio stutters and rare program lag anyways from someone who had BIOS 1.06 (or was it 1.05? can't remember),1.08 and 1.09 there are problems in all of them, and I really hope the Acer team would at least let us know somehow they are aware, in the mean time let…

Yeah I have the same thing happen to me, do any of you guys happen to also have audio problems? Like small stutters, youtube audio getting out of sync, and rare awful sound glitching? I have no audio problems on ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (although I did have to disable some features related to ACPI, C-states and RCU in the kernel…

Try the 1.08 BIOS update at acer's support page, mine with Ryzen 2500U used to get locked at 0.38GHz, after the update now it only has horrible latency and for some reason in BIOS 1.09 (which you can get by doing a firmware driver update through windows device manager) the cpu clock drops to 1.50GHz causing program…

I had the same thing happen to me (system just shutdown and got corrupted, and then failed to recover), had to install windows from a USB since Acer support has been teasing me with sending me a USB e-Recovery media for more than a month now. If you can't return it ask the "elite" support if they can send you the recovery…

You could try opening Radeon Settings > System > Switchable Graphics, there you should see a grid of programs (recent ones or recently opened), if you recently opened skyrim it should show up in there skyrim.exe or something similar, if you find the executable of the game click on it and change its option to high…

I have the same laptop. There recently was a bios upgrade on the acer support page for this laptop, the one listed there as most recent is 1.08, that seemed to fix this issue for me. You can also try updating the bios through windows device manager, apparently windows database has BIOS 1.09 which is odd that it hasn't come…
