Inexpensive Laptop Life

Hi!  I have a pretty nice desktop but I would like a very inexpensive Acer laptop ($200 - $300) to go on the Internet with.  The kind that have plastic housings.  I would treat it very well , be very careful with it.  I would be doing documents and the Internet.    I was told that these type of laptops that are built in plastic cases have very little life times.  Two years at the most.  Is this true?  Aprox. how many years would could you expect it to last?
