  • Just to note that fnding a compatible Bluetooth keyboard should not be a problem; I've used two, from different manufacturers, in addition to the one in the keyboard folio case and have had no problems with any of them.
  • justinsswong wrote:Thanks for the info Padgett and apologies for the delay as I've been busy travelling. I have two questions regarding your solution: 1. What does the " Fem-Fem USB-A gender changer" do? I have the same setup he does (copied from his posting on the Toshiba Encore support board). The StarTech cable we use…
  • Yes, mine came with a short (12-inch) white USB/micro-USB cable.
  • Just an extra plug for FreeOffice from SoftMaker: from now until 24 December, for each copy downloaded they will donate ten euro cents to charities around the world. I've used their products for years; they're extremely capable and very compatible both reading and creating Microsoft files. It's hard to beat that deal: an…
  • For people who can't wait until January (or whenever the W4 actually becomes available, assuming it does) and who don't need the HDMI output, Microsoft stores are offering the Dell Venue 8 Pro for $100 on Monday, 9 December. That's not a typo, but only the first 20 units sold or within the first hour after the store opens…
  • Several sites are repeating a Slashgear report pegging the release of the W4 (interestingly, the 64GB version first, followed by the 32GB version at a later date) for the end of January. There's also a spiffy YouTube promo that Acer posted a couple of weeks ago for the W4. (I really like the origami-style cases demoed in…
  • Wouldn't be the first promising product to turn into vaporware. Too bad; based on my experience so far with the Encore, I think the W4 would have been a nice unit.
  • I'm sure that the questions are being read; that doesn't mean that they will consider it to be in their best interests to answer them. The unit has obviously been delayed or canceled, whether for unforeseen technical reasons (e.g., they might have had several catch on fire while charging or some such) or corporate strategy…
  • I don't know about the W4 (obviously, since Acer hasn't started shipping them yet, if they ever do), but at least for the Dell Venue there are a couple of ways to hack up cables and/or hubs to allow both charging and USB peripherals at the same time. There's a thread on tabletpcreview.com that explores the issues and…
  • Too bad, Acer missed their window of opportunity. I gave up waiting for the W4 and bought a Toshiba Encore from Staples (with a yesterday-only $50-off coupon, bringing the priced down to $280). Judging from the published specs, I probably would have preferred the W4, but I was buying for a Christmas present, and I couldn't…
  • It is possible, but not a good experience. Although it is very possible to select small screen elements (check boxes, expand/contract buttons, etc.), the driver has a problem with motion: basically, it smooths out movements so that you have to make large letters for them to be recognizable. (For example, the loop in a…
  • I also have the 700P. I never had the wifi problem, and I've never heard the fan (although I imagine it might be audible in a very quiet environment). I did have to tweak the processor low-power settings after upgrading to 8.1, but it doesn't seem to have affected my battery life. I don't use it for long periods on…
  • It still doesn't appear that the W4 is available, unless I've missed something. Staples.com shows the Toshiba Encore as being "in stock online" and several stores around me as having "low stock." Staples is even listing it for a Black Friday discount. Looks like that's the direction I'll have to go, considering that only…
  • I'm curious if anyone knows the answer to this. It appears that the W4 will be charged using the micro-USB port -- is that true? If so, can it be charged at the same time it's being used with USB peripherals? The principle attraction of a device like this for me is for it to do double duty -- to be able to use it as a…
  • LiamT wrote: So basically this tablet is useless without a USB keyboard (even though you can plugin the keyboard to the USB port?? It just doesn’t work as a USB keyboard) and a DVD drive. Yes, the USB connection on the Bluetooth keyboard is only for charging, unfortunately. It would be nice if having the USB plugged in…
  • Yes, that is the stylus that came with my W700.
  • I would guess that it is normal for Windows 8 on a system like the W700, with only a capacitive touchscreen and not an active digitizer.
  • That's odd. Yes, I can draw with my finger, too; the stylus is just a lot more accurate in selecting things on the screen. If your finger works on the screen but the stylus doesn't, the stylus is defective. Perhaps you can get a replacement from Acer?
  • It can't hurt to turn the keyboard off after using it; I haven't used it for long periods of time (less than two hours at a shot so far), but I haven't noticed any problems with the battery life. In any event, to turn the keyboard off, press and hold the power switch for 3-4 seconds until the right LED blinks once or…
