Acer Iconia W4 Availability

When will the W4 be available for purchase?  All the early reviews indicated it would be out before the end of October, but it still doesn't appear to be available anywhere.

I have been seeking this answer for the last 2 weeks.

Agreed. It has finally appeared on the Acer website, but it's not available online, and it's not in U.S. retail yet. Would love to get one ASAP and review it...

I saw it on amazon with an out of stock listing, but it is no longer there. it was even linked from the W4 page here on Acer's website.

Acer lists the W4 (32 and 64) on their web site but if you push "buy" it is not available online. Other than the brane-ded Venue, there has been a remarkable lack of media since mid October on the competition also.

The Microsoft store now lists the Lenovo MiiX 2 as the end of December. Amazon has the Toshiba Encore just as available for pre-order with no date. Have to wonder if there is a glitch somewhere (e.g. a video driver problems).

Do know that if they miss Black Friday, all of the Bay Trail tabs are going to be in trouble (and worse if the media has only the Venue (Release date: 11/17/2013 ) to test and label all Bay Trail tabs with it's brush).</rant>

For those who have been on Mars, the Dell is using the Z3740D processor which appears to be a slip in replacement for a Z2760 chassis. So far everyone else appears to be using the Z3740 (no D) which is a 64 bit  rather than 32, has nearly double the memory performance, and can use 4GB of memory instead of 2GB. It is possible that the 1.3GHz 32 bit version will perform even slower than last year's z2760s (W3, W510). </science lesson>

So it's just wait and see. The silence is deafening.

ps don't believe me, I may be biased, just check out the Intel specs and scroll down to "Memory Specifications.

But it's coming with a 32-bit build? Is that because 8.1 64-bit doesn't have the latest tablet features? (and it's bigger?)

B&H has it listed too, January availability.

I suspect it is because Intel does not have the thermal mamagement drivers needed for a ventless tablet to be able to run at turbo speed in 64 bit yet. Same thing may be holding back the 4GB memory the processor can handle.

Or it may be a conspirSmiley Happycy.

ps B&H may be confused since it lists "B&H # ACW48202671  Mfr # NT.L31AA.005" while the Acer site lists the 32gb Iconia W4-820-2894 NT.L31AA.004 and 64GB  Iconia W4-820-2466 NT.L31AA.002 so do not know what a .005 would be.

I'm inclined to swing by a Best Buy in LA and see if it's on the shelves yet. Sometimes this stuff trickles out into the retail channel without anyone taking much notice.

p.s. another manufacturer's 64GB model went on sale today...wonder if Acer will adjust?

I'm curious if anyone knows the answer to this.  It appears that the W4 will be charged using the micro-USB port -- is that true?  If so, can it be charged at the same time it's being used with USB peripherals?  The principle attraction of a device like this for me is for it to do double duty -- to be able to use it as a desktop replacement at home, then pick it up and carry it with me for offsite use.  However, if I have to choose between charging the device and using it with my mouse, keyboard, and printer, I don't think it's really suitable for my intended use (or at least it will be a good deal more expensive as I'll have to buy a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse in addition to the tablet).

Suspect you are talking about the 10" T100TA. It does claim to have USB 3.0 but I have not seen anything about a GPS yet. Personally, my next purchase will be an 8" Windows tab but so far have only seen that in one and wasn't from manufacturer's specs.

I suspect the reason for 12v charging to to have a quick charge possible without a lot of current, can't think of anything that won't run with a 5v supply. With a  5v/500ma (2.5w) USB supply, charging might never happen if the device is on.

The "other" 8" Bay Trail tabs are now featured on Microsoft but no W4. One is advertised as having GPS. I doubt that many realize how important that is for a pocketable tab.

Think I need to make the "Big 3" (HDMI, USB, and SDCard slots) the "Big 4" and include GPS.

Anyone remember 1985 when computers were made or broken depending on whether they could run three programs: Wordstar, Lotus 1-2-3 (which caused the "640k barrier"), and Microsoft Flight Simulator (which required a compatible BIOS).

It still doesn't appear that the W4 is available, unless I've missed something.  Staples.com shows the Toshiba Encore as being "in stock online" and several stores around me as having "low stock."  Staples is even listing it for a Black Friday discount.  Looks like that's the direction I'll have to go, considering that only the W4 and Encore have HDMI output.  Too bad; the W4 seems like a nice unit and is noticeably lighter than the Encore.

Personally, I have changed the "Big 3" must haves, USB, HDMI, SD Card, to the "Big 4" adding GPS. We excused its lack in many ways for Clover Trail while the main competition, Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy both had GPS from day 1. Am afraid we should no longer.

Microsoft's tag line "One device for all that you do." is the future. Sizes will continue to shrink though as we get to design rules under 10 nm I wonder what is next: single molecule gates ? Contact lens monitors ?

I do believe we are in the middle of a paradigm shift and "one device" IS the new reality. Finally I am seing interest in WTG as a means to separate a protected environment from a personal one for a customer who must comply with HIPAA and PIA yet wants BYOD as a cost-saver. (enough acronyms ?)

Along with that the computing device becomes almost incidental and accessorization particularly software is where the real money lies.

With the "Big 4" there is really only one stumbling block left: a common docking station. I see the competion moving that way, just look for "dual display".

ps for 2013 I think that "under $300" is nice but "under $400" with the needed features is what will sell. For 2014 "more" will be expected (2.4 GHz, 4GB, 256 GB SDD).

If the W4 is like other devices that use the micro usb port as a host port and charger you should be able to use a POWERED USB hub to charge it AND use it to connect other devices at the same time.  I use one on my W3 and i can connect USB drives, wireless mouse and thumbdrives at the same time.  I have not tried a printer yet as i have had no need to.  I will be looking for a W4 but I still love my W3.......

Too bad, Acer missed their window of opportunity.  I gave up waiting for the W4 and bought a Toshiba Encore from Staples (with a yesterday-only $50-off coupon, bringing the priced down to $280).  Judging from the published specs, I probably would have preferred the W4, but I was buying for a Christmas present, and I couldn't afford to pass up the $50 discount on a tablet that I think will do nearly as well.  (If anyone else is in a similar boat, Staples has the Encore for $300 for Black Friday.)

That one also is said to have a GPS.

Wonder is Acer is going to pull a Henry Ford, shutdown and retool for one basic Windows (8", 10", and ultrabook) (and one similar Android chassis) and go straight to a 2.4 GHz z3770 with 4 GB ram, 120 GB SSD, and USB 3.0...

Doesn't anyone from Acer Corporate read these comments/questions about the release date on this product, especially now at the peak marketing/selling time of the year here in the USA?  I would like to examine a W4 and perhaps buy but you can't even find one, even on the Acer website, which should have them first you'd think.

I'm sure that the questions are being read; that doesn't mean that they will consider it to be in their best interests to answer them.  The unit has obviously been delayed or canceled, whether for unforeseen technical reasons (e.g., they might have had several catch on fire while charging or some such) or corporate strategy (e.g., with recent financial/management issues, they might not want to undertake the costs of a full introduction of a new product that is a bit of a niche item and whose sales prospects are cloudy).  They might just want to let the thing die quietly without making any more fuss about it.

This is all speculation, of course, but it's very rare that corporations will give much insight into the reasons for product delays or even acknowledge them.

Well having to have a Bay Trail for development/checkout I really did not have much choice. Am learning why you really do not want to use a single USB port for charging and how to modify a switched hub to make possible.

Looks like Acer is having a rethink - the W4 listing is no longer at Acer.com -URL now gives a server error.

Wouldn't be the first promising product to turn into vaporware. Too bad; based on my experience so far with the Encore, I think the W4 would have been a nice unit.
