As you can see in the image below, there's just the HID-compliant mouse listed. The info to the right of that is the properties for that device. It looks like it's a Synaptics touchpad and I downloaded and installed the driver for that, but I can't find the software for the touchpad. On a previousl laptop I had a Synaptics…

Okay - before I do that, though: if I uninstall that pointing device driver - the only one listed in Device Manager - won't I lose functionality of the touchpad and/or mouse?

"SYN" is in that information, so it must be Synaptics. But the type of device is a mouse, or is that some generic device name for pointing devices on the macine?

I can't tell which touchpad it is. Acer's drivers page for this laptop with Win 8 has driver download for both manufacturers. Is there a way to find out which one I have? There's nothing listed in Mice and other pointing devices in Device Manager for a touchpad - just the mouse driver.
