Yes indeed, a system restore back a month did the trick. Further updates installed OK and still the laptop now allows correct login every time, from standby or hibernate. So problem solved. ;D

Thanks for the steps threeninety but sadly even updating my BIOS to 2.17 and following your steps exactly failed to rid the watermark from my desktop. So back to Mr Acer. How about a patch to fix this for everyone?
