Can the Aspire R5-471T USB-C port support a monitor?

I own an Aspire R5-471T Windows 10 Pro (with latest updates). Can its USB-C port support a monitor, so I can have TWO monitors at once - one using the HDMI port and an extended one using the USB-C port?  I think the laptop needs something called "DisplayPort Alternate Mode", or maybe Thunderbolt, in order to do this.  But I don't think I have it, because when I attach a USB-C to HDMI adapter, I simply get "USB Device Not Recognized" errors.  My Aspire was built in Sept 2015 so perhaps this DP Alt Mode capability wasn't included?  Can someone tell me for sure - and if I don't have it, can I get it somehow?   (I know I can use the regular USB 2.0 port but it has been flaky, with one of the two external monitors going black intermittently).
