Notebook 5517 powers on but no screen activity

My notebook has been working fine until recently.  But now it is doing this and I can't get it to open properly.  What can I do?  (I'm looking for a no-cost or low-cost solution -- if I could I just get another laptop but I'm rather low on options right now.)

Try the recommendation by Scotty in the following link for resetting the bios to factory defaults. You can do this via the keyboard without seeing the screen. Hope it helps. If not, Scotty might have other ideas for you to try.

Right you are JackE, a bios reset often will solve this issue. Another common fix is to try a power drain. This is done by simply unplugging the unit, removing the battery and then holding the power button for roughly 30 second (yes with no power or batter). This completely removes any remaining voltage from the unit and often solves many issues related to devices not starting properly. It can also force the system to do a full POST (Power On Self Test) which can find and correct issues as well. If this doesn't work it may well be a physical issue with either the LCD panel or it's cable, or the graphics adapter. You can test the graphics adapter by pluggin in an external display, which is also a pretty simple fix for your no display issue if you don't have the money to throw at a permanent fix. Try the steps suggested by JackE as well as the one's I have suggested. If they fail please feel free to respond and I will do my best to assist. Hopefully one of them will solve your issue, best of luck and take care!

Thank you very much for all responses.

Here's how things stand ... I was able to take the laptop to a computer tech who was nice enough to take a look for free.  He tried those suggestions RE power and also an external video display.  Nothing worked and he concluded a failing motherboard.  Returning home I put it away and while occupied elsewhere my husband, on purpose, dropped the laptop on the floor and - voila! - so far, it's working.

I'm fairly sure the computer tech was right and eventually I'll have to somehow get another laptop.  I noticed some fairly reasonably priced, refurbished ones while I was out.  However I'm now typing on the mysterious, but working laptop.

    (((shrug)))

I'm still extremely interested in opinions and suggestions.  What do you think?

Glad to hear it's working again. Sounds like a loose or corroded cable connection or solder joint somewhere. You probably should backup your important data ASAP onto another machine/medium.
