W510 USB Boot / Install alternate OS / take and restore image

Hey Everyone,

I'm trying to boot to USB in order to take an image before I attempt to install w7

So far I've learned that:

Limited to 32 bit OS (linux not an option)

There is no Legacy option for this device, UEFI only

Need to turn off Secure Boot (which doesn't really turn off?)

Some seem to have had luck booting from a Fat32 USB (i've tried with no luck)

Has anyone had any luck with any of these? Any hints or a procedure would be MUCH appreciated.  Thanks.

Fletcher

if u are on a w700 off course you can, even android can run on it dual booting.

if u are talking about w510/w511 forget about it until a new firmware enables legacy or some other alternatives comes along.

if u are on w500 then u r in luck, its still on legacy cmiiw, at least androidx86 runs on it.

Wow, key piece of inofrmation left out of original post - It's a W510

Still looking for possible methods, if no one's done this I need to pioneer a solution here, it's for my work Smiley Happy

Gunggu, have you tried this, can you let me know where the process failed for you?

    Thanks!

The more interest this topic gets the better chance Acer might release a UEFI update right??  Let's hear your experiences!

Haven't tried but am told what you need to do is as follows: (may need to reboot after each).

    1) enter boot setup (pwr + vol down)

    2) set boot password

    3) erase all secure boot settings

    4) disable secure boot

    5) Set to boot from USB first

    6) Save all

    7) Have at it - should boot anything (and there are 32 bit versions of Linux)

Be aware that only Windows 8 has the power management features to prevent overheating without a fan.

It wont do padgett, its the bootable usb detection issue, not the method to boot from first issue. Someone also suggesting using a certain nic to boot as alternatives but i am not that tech savvy so i mind of doing it.

Guess I do not understand, I have booted from USB before.

As the title said, its usb bootable for other 32 bit based OS mate, if its for windows 8 or other recognizable uefi devices i can also do it without problems.

I understand that. Did you go through the process of disabling the UEFI as I outlined in the first post ?

If you have then I will try it with mine, just did not want to chance issues until the W3 gets here since these are personal devices and the 510 is my only Win8/tablet testbed.

Hey guys, thanks for the discussion!  Padgett, I've tried all those steps with the exception of erasing secure boot settings.  This is our only unit at the moment and I didn't see any docs on what that meant exactly.

You both seem to have booted from USB which I have not.  I recently tried a usb DVD drive with a windows 8 32 bit disk and it still did not see it.  What media were you both using when you had success?  Thanks!

gunggu, I really appreciate the feedback.  I'll have to look for that dvd, I was simply handed the device.  How about you padgett?  What were you able to boot from?

I was primarily booting Windows to Go from a number of media.

Kestrel, for usb drive (not dvd) i was able to boot using one of our member's guide here (only windows 8 not other os):

Here are the steps needed to create a bootable USB drive:
    1. Use a 4GB or smaller flash drive.
    2. Follow these steps for creating the bootable drive: http://www.servethehome.com/uefi-bootable-usb-drive-windows-8-windows-server-2012/
    3. While powering up, hold down the volume down button.  Once in the BIOS setp, assign an admin password under the security section, and then disable Secure Boot under the boot section. Save the settings and reboot.
    4. With the USB drive plugged in, the OS installation should now boot!

I did, and had, followed that procedure to create my bootdisk but have not used a disk 4GB or below.. are you sure it isn't 4GB or above?  Sadly I still can't get it to see the USB drive at boot time... I have yet to delete the secure boot settings because turning off secure boot disables that menu and so I assume it's bypassing that check.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong here!

I have used everything from a 4GB flash to a 120GB SDD. For some things the USB has to be recognised as a fixed drive or CD and not a removable drive.

BTW you can create a bootable flash drive by using the Create Recovery Disk utility.

Without erasing the store I believe you are limited to UEFI boots (my understnding is that the W510 has only Acer and Microsoft certs in the store). Erasing is the only way to turn off the check.

Once I receive the W3 (Amazon is saying 3 July), I'll try erasing the W510 store. Since both are Clover Trail based I suspect the BIOS is the same.

Right, size of USB drive doesn't seem to be an issue as long as it's over 4GB.

I was able to finally get it to see a USB at boot using the Recovery method you mentioned.

I was then able to get it to see(failed to boot but it saw it) another USB containing winPE by copying the bootia32.efi file from /efi/boot/ on the Recover USB created by the Acer utility.  That was a 64bit WinPE though so that was the failure point.

Next test is to create a bootable USB with W732bit on it and copy that file into /efi/boot/ to try booting into that.  I'm pretty sure that will not work but it's my first attempt soo  Smiley Happy

Thanks for all the help so far, hope we can get another OS on this thing despite the heat issues it may have after.

Padgett, have you booted into 32 bit win7 (or below) Windows to Go?  I ask because the limitation so far seems to be 32bit installs do not work with EFI unless it's Win8.

As I mentioned the bootia32.efi file from the win8 recover created by the Acer allows a Win7 32bit usb installer to boot, but crashes due to incorrect paramaters/drivers indicated in the boottia32.efi.  This file is not a simple ASCII file to be edited either.  Any thoughts?

I feel like I could get Win764 bit on this tablet easily if it wasn't a 32-bit processor Smiley Sad

Alot of this isn't really applicable to the w510 UEFI menu, but it is worth a read..
