Aspire VX5 - can't get above 60 Hz

I have a VX5 with Nvidia GTX 1050 ti (and Intel HD 630 onboard).
I recently got an AOC 24G2 monitor as a present, but no matter what I do, I can't get my Hz above 60 in CSGO.
My laptop only has HDMI, so I connect the monitor (which supports 144 Hz also trough HDMI) with HDMI to my laptop.
I go to the Intel graphic options settings which let me set the refresh rate for the new monitor to 120 Hz (which I guess is the max for the HDMI 1.4b?).
When I enter CSGO, I can see the NVIDIA gfx is used as graphics controller, but I can't get it to run more then 60 Hz in 1920x1080. I believe I should be able to reach at least 120 Hz, right (through HDMI)?
As I can understand from a lot of googling, my VX5 HDMI port is handled by the onboard Intel HD 630 graphics card, but I can only find posts telling me that 630 supports 144 Hz through HDMI. The notification area also shows the Nvidia icon telling me 0 screens connected but several programs running on Nvidia (which I've set it to do).

I hope someone can explain why it only runs 60 Hz in CSGO, when I've set the refresh rate at 120 Hz in the Intel graphics card settings - and whether I should be able to actually run 144 Hz also.

Sorry. While the GPUs may be capable of higher rates, ACER only warrants support for 60Hz max at 1080p. Higher rates have been reported for a few external monitors but not consistently for the VX5's HDMI 1.4b output. Jack E/NJ

My final attempt would be to get a USB-C to Displayport cable. I can see others managed to get this working on other laptops, and as far as I can see, the USB-C should be able to handle it, right?0

Not directly you need an active USB-to-video converter since the USB A & C ports support data-only. Essentially another GPU. Some folks have reported success with the following converters but refresh rates are questionable. There may be others but these have been claimed to work so far by users. I've also included a few HDMI converters that may yield higher rates. Jack E/NJdisplayport

From the manual (i think, unsure of your exact model)

I dont think the USBc supports video, it would have to be a displaylink monitor rather than displayport sorry0 -
Hmmm okay.
But it seems other have managed it:

Although its the other way around the USB-C seems to accept the raw DP-signal?
I don't think I can change the onboard GPU without it will cost a fortune. Then I could aswell buy a desktop instead.0 -

So USBC is a weird one, DP has to be baked in to offer it, so the dell has thunderbolt 3 and USBC displayport, for example the predator 500 (https://content.etilize.com/User-Manual/1048424869.pdf) States that displayport over USB is supported, so you could hook up say a Occulus Quest 2 to the USB c and it would work as the port is also linked to the GPU. Dell suggests that the DP logo should be on all the laptops which support it (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000141328/displayport-over-usb-type-c) but this isnt usually the case either!
The manual for yours doesnt have the DP tag, so it has a high chance of it not working. Display Link is another standard which uses USBC data to transmit te video, so it works with Any USB3 or USBC port (they are great portable screens), i dont think these go above 60hz though:
https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/525038-displaylink-display-resolution-support
Your not able to change the internal GPU either, you may be able to get a eGPU enclosure, but unsure if these are just thunderbolt or are USBC 3.1 as well

>>>So... there is no official way to get my 144 Hz monitor working on the VX-5 then? USB-C only supports data, and HDMI does not output more than 60 Hz no-matter what i do - is that correctly understood? >>>Correct. Unlikely to achieve the monitor's full potential. Jack E/NJ

All that can be said is that it's less unlikely. But still unlikely. Simply because more (not all) users have reported being able to achieve 120Hz than 144Hz. And more still reported achieving 75Hz/90Hz than 120Hz. Jack E/NJ

I would like to update my thread, as I found out, how I can reach 120 Hz.
- First, I had to make sure I was connected to a power outlet (not running battery)
- I downloaded the newest compatible driver, I could find - which was this one
- Make sure that when connecting your laptop to the screen through HDMI, that you choose to 'Show only on extended screen / Screen 2' in the monitor settings. I had the 'duplicate screen' on - and as soon as I chose only to view on the external monitor, I was able to set refresh rate to 120 in the monitor settings in Windows 10.

Congratulations. Thanks for your report on achieving 120Hz.
