Okay, so I'm using a fairly old Acer Predator G6-710.

So I recently just got a new SSD (Samsung 860 EVO), and when it's connected via SATA it is not recognized in the BIOS (says not installed, no other information)

In the device manager, it shows up as "Generic - SD/MMC/MS PRO USB Device", I've tried uninstalling and rebooting, same thing.

In Disk Management, it shows up as a removable device with no media, and while I can set a letter to it, it can't be initialized...

Tried multiple SATA slots and cables, including the quick swap bay.

Do I need to flash my BIOS?  And if so, how do I do that safely?

Never mind, I dropped it off at a friends and he tried it out, it connected and initialized no problem on his computer.  It's not the drive.
What the heck am I supposed to do now?
Sorry to post on my own answer, but it's not letting me edit for some reason lol.

The drive is now recognized and seems to be working after my friend initialized and formatted it.  Clearly there is something wrong with my BIOS, that it couldn't detect it before then, but, I'm not going to risk flashing since this seems to be working now.  Just wanted to provide an update to close out the topic.  Thank you for the information given.

Thank you for the quick reply.

This is what my BIOS says I currently have:

I have never updated the BIOS, and thus have no idea of how to do so.  I really don't want to brick my computer lol.
  • I believe that nvme support will depend on the review of the motherboard. However, can you upload a photo from this guide?

I'm not sure what guide it is you're referring to, but this is what my BIOS screen looks like for that tab.  Also noting that IDE isn't an option for me, only RAID and AHCI.

No, I don’t, I only have the one computer, and my region is currently restricting inter household visits so I can’t even take it to a family or friends place to test it :(

  • Probably the ssd was not converted to gpt. But it should have appeared earlier. However, it is a good thing that your computer recognized the ssd.
