The top half of the laptop screen is dark, but the image can still be seen. The top right corner went dark months ago and in the beginning could be coaxed into lighting up again by pushing the back of the screen some. The top left corner went dark a few weeks ago, and again, could be coaxed into coming back on by pressing and holding the back of the screen.

I want to try my hand at fixing it before the whole screen goes.

Any idea what parts I should replace? My guess is the screen itself is ok but there's some other hardware issue.

It's an Acer Aspire E5 576g and the laptop is barely two years old but travels a lot so may have seen some light abuse...

Could you show us a picture? It might the backlight LEDs failing, but I have never seen them go away one at a time before.

Sure! Backlight LEDs...I'm just hoping it doesn't get worse, but that was my hope before a few weeks ago also.

As you can see, the right side (facing the screen) is darker than the left. In bright light it's almost impossible to read and minimizing/closing screens is just guesswork

I'm guessing even at it's worst you can take a flashlight and shine on the dark areas to see that the normal stuff is there, just not lit up. The backlight is bonded in as part of the display, so it doesn't look like there is any easy path to repair. I can't visualize any way for the issue to require less than a screen replacement. :( Luckily they have built a lot of Aspire E5-576Gs over the lifespan, so there is likely a bunch of them on the secondary market. I'd look for a good deal on the screen and get a replacement eDP cable as well. If you have the time you could replace the cable first to make sure you don't just have some broken wiring...
