Acer Aspire 7551G powers on but will not boot

I was given a 7551G to attempt to fix for my daughter:
Acer Aspire 7551G-5821 laptop, Series 7551G, Model MS2310, SNID: XXXXXX, S/N: LXPXF020490XXXXXXXXXX.

On AC power it will power on (the blue power light and blue power button both turn on), the fan runs and if you put a bootable CD in the drive it will spin it up, but that is all. Nothing on the screen, the HDD light never blinks and I don't hear it spin up. I have seen a lot of "fried motherboard" responses to these symptoms, but the fact it tries to spin up the CD makes it appear that is not the problem. For example, I have seen bad memory do weird things. My daughter told me she tried a number of different things before she asked me to look at it (she is fairly knowledgeable), so it IS possible it is the motherboard, but I am looking for a 2nd opinion before I start ripping it apart.

Ideas, Suggestions ?
Thanks

    Tinkerer

I think I had the same problem.
I once fixed it by doing this:
(I didn't know how to do the A: drive thing so I just changed the drive letter of my USB flash drive to A: instead of editing the .bat file).
It revived the laptop but the BIOS probably corrupted again after putting it in sleep mode.
I think maybe sleep and hibernation somehow corrupt the BIOS, just a theory.

So now I'm back to square one and the fix doesn't seem to work a second time. Strange.
