w510 random lockup / freezing

Haven't seen a thread on this so not sure if it's just me -- is anyone seeing random freezes on their W510 tablet?

They happen to me but pretty randomly. There doesn't seem to be any specific app that triggers it. The system locks up, the screen stays on but nothing responds (keyboard doesn''t respond, ctrl+alt+del does nothing, touch screen does nothing, rotate screen does nothing, single press of power button does nothing).

The only way to get out of this is to hold the power button down for a few seconds to force the deivce to shut off then power up again.

It's a shame -- I really love this device other than the touchpad, random lockups and sound dying randomly. There's already threads on teh touchpad and the sound.

Is it just my device or are others seeing random lockups too?

I have the same issue, so its not only your device. It seems to happen more often when i dock the device or remove it from the keyboard dock.

maybe you have a defective unit.  i had the same thing happened to my unit where it wont even shut down properly unless i hold the power button down.  i returned the unit and the new one has no issues including touchpad working fine.

Looks lockups are not as widespread an issue as sound-disappearing and touchpad issues so maybe I do have a bad unit.

I'll send it back for a replacment -- hopfully the replacement doesn't lock up.

    Hi,

Can you please download the driver package from the Acer Support Site. This is called "W510 Driver package". This will go through update the drivers and also the latest BIOS for the machine. Once you download unzip the file and run the setup. You will have to have unit on charge to perform the update.

I too have the random lockup problem--in about 2 weeks of ownership the unit has frozen 4-5 times. Enough to be annoying but I still love the W510 and so will see if the Acer Driver Package fixes the issue or not--thanks, @Chris!

    I owned W510 for ~20 days, stock system+driver, totally about 10 crash/lockup/freezing, including:

3 blue screens (possibly due to driver problems)

    2 touch screen lockup (driver?)

2-3 sleep death (never wakeup from sleep...)

3-4 freezing (usually in desktop multi-tasking)

I have updated the newest drivers (13/Dec), so far I had 1 freezing and 1 lose sound problems.

Again, sleep death, just after some firefox browsing...

Update: for each sleep death, when I reboot the computer, windows reports a bsod, I send the bsod info to microsoft.

I've probably had 1 sleep deat or so.

But the lockups might possibly be tied with the sound issue. I noticed that the freeze happens often when a notifcation comes on screen which usually should make a sound but it doesnt -- then the device locks up. I'll keep an eye out to see if there are more hints to the cause of the lockup.

I'm hoping someone at Acer is reading these and is working on reproducing the issue and fixing the driver!

So it turns out if I leave the computer alone when it freezes it shows a blue screen of death with error "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".

Complete error: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs torestart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (100% complete)" ... "If you'd like to know more, you can search online latr for this error: DRIVER_POWE_STATE_FAILURE".

The PC doesn't restart though -- I still need to hold down the power button to force it to shut off and restart.

PS. This is a replacement PC -- the replacement also freezes. Smiley Sad

I too have the random lockups and the sound issue. Things have improved with the latest-greatest updates, however, the issue still remains. Scouring forums, I see that other vendors are having similar issues with the drivers for these Intel/Broadcom tablets (wi-fi disconnects, hangs  and sound issues).

I am not sure if this is Intel/Broadcom, Windows 8 or Acer.  However, I decided to try Acer again after giving up on them, years ago. After the instability here, I am seriously thinking I was a fool to buy from Acer again....shame on me.

If Acer doesnt fix it soon, it is ending up in the trash and I go back to Samsung or Asus.

    Tinypocket,

I had the same issue with the same error message when I first bought W510. Screen freezes whenever I dock or undock the tablet to the keyboard or after a while of fiddling with it.

I went to Acer Service Center who asks me to get a replacement from the shop where I bought it since it was just 2 days' old since my purchase.

I got my replacement and it works fine now.

Previously, my USB and micro SD card slots were not working too.

Now, everything is ok (more than a week already since I had the replacement) except for

    1) "Sleep and Can't Wake Up" syndrome and

    2) sometimes erractic mouse movements in trackpad issues which is what most ppl are getting.

I can make do with issue #2 but issue #1, I'm still trying to find out the reason...

I am having the same problem. Random freezes are annoying, how can I feel good if I am spending that kind of money to get best only to know you getting the worst? Please, its annoying, it doesn't let me trust my PC while working anymore... fix the problem please, its shame that it is such a great machine with pretty much everything I wanted, but software side is not taken care of... I used samsung ativ for few days, that thing never gave me any troubles frankly...

I already have recent drivers. I am planning to do a full recovery, just waiting for my external drive to come. I hope that solves whatever is the problem...

I got my w510 at Christmas and I LOVE it, but it has had 3 issues:

    1) The random lockup/freezing issue talked about on this forum

    2) trackpad inconsistency

    3) occasional keyboard "lock" where the same letter is typed over and over for a couple of seconds.

#2 and #3 are fairly benign -- I have a wireless mouse and you just have to backspace a lot every once in a while.  The first one is a real problem as it happens at least once a day.  The reboot is fast but it's still unacceptable to have to do it.  Thanks to this forum I just went looking for the latest driver package and found version 2.11.  Installation was a little bit of a challenge and you have to be connected to a power source, but it eventually worked and for 3 days I haven't had a lockup.  Fingers crossed, but if you haven't tried this, do it.
