Hello:  we just got an xfinity x1 router and everything in the house connects to it EXCEPT my acer laptop.  I have had numerous discussions with Xfinity and they tell me it's a manufacturer problem.  I even downloaded what I thought were the most recent wifi drivers.  Xfinity even split our signal into 2.4 and 5 ghz connections.  I am at a loss.  What can I do?

Do you have a wifi network icon in the lower right tray, perhaps with a yellow exclamation? When you click on the icon, what do you see? A screenshot would be good if possible. Jack E/NJ

    Hello:

Thank you for responding.  I click on the upwards carrot in the lower right hand tray, go into wifi, and it will connect for a second and then it disconnects and says it "can't connect to this network."  I have no exclamation point as we are running two modems right now because I work from home and need to connect to the old network to get my work done.  I just don't understand why it won't stay connected.  Like I said, I downloaded the most recent drivers that are out there and it still won't work.  I am at a loss and wondering if my computer is just too old and I need to purchase a new one.

Does the signal strength icon seem strong? Jack E/NJ

It is very strong.  It’s definitely not an issue of signal strength.  I really think it’s a driver issue.

Good. Open DeviceManager. Click 'network adapters'. Right click wifi adapter. Click 'properties'. Click 'advanced tab'. Click wifi mode. What channel is it currently set to? Example, Channel 12 - 802.11 abgnac. How many other channels are available? Jack E/NJ

Thanks for all your help.  It says it is an Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7265.  It is set to channel 802.11n Channel Width for 2.4 GHz.  The only other channel is 802.11n Channel Width for 5.2GHz.  Then there are 18 other properties listed there.  Xfinity split our modem into two parts, a 2.4 ghz and a 5ghz.  We have tried connecting to both with the same results.  This is so frustrating.  Even a work-supplied Dell in the home connects with no problem!

Did you click 'wifi mode'. There should be a lot more channels like shown below. Jack E/NJ

I will try.  The computer belongs to a local government that my spouse works for and I'm not sure I can get into those settings, but I will try.  Good idea!

Meanwhile, try channel 12 on the ACER. You can always change it again later. Jack E/NJ

I don't see channel 12?  Do you see it?  How do I get to it?

I downloaded the one from 2017.  It was the only one listed.

Thank you for all your help.  I appreciate your sticking with me to get it fixed.  It connected as soon as I downloaded the drivers!  Do you know why it would connect to the 2.4 vs the 5?  Just curious.

Open DeviceManager again. Click network adapters folder. Right click wifi adapter. Click properties. Click advanced tab. Click preferred band. If it's set to 2.4GHz, try no preference or 5GHz instead. Usually won't make much of a difference. Jack E/NJ
