How to fix Acer Nitro 5 Nitro 5 AN515-51 Black screen that won't start up

A few days ago I've been having a problem with my Acer Nitro 5 Nitro 5 AN515-51 where when I turn it on it will show the Acer logo and say "Preparing automatic Repair" and then going to a black screen. The problem with the screen is that it isn't completely black but slightly lit. My keyboard still lights up and I can hear that the computer sounds like it is running, but the screen doesn't change. A day before this happened, my computer was running really slow and would take a while just to open up any program and use it. I figured that it was because the graphics drivers weren't updated, so I updated it, restarted and now it won't even turn on. Now I can't even get passed the Acer startup screen. I've tried booting it into safe mode but it doesn't get anywhere besides the black screen. Please help me, and thanks.

Kindly try to do BIOS defaults by following the below instructions.

1)Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, or until your system shuts completely down.
2)Press the power button to power on the system. Immediately keep on tapping F2 to enter the BIOS.
3)Press F9 and then Enter to load the default configuration.
4)Press F10 and then Enter to save and exit.

If this doesn't work, let's try a factory reset which will bring your unit to default settings.

Thanks for the answer, MartinJohn00001. This sadly does not fix the problem and I still get the black screen again. You said to try the factory reset? How would I factory reset it?

    Hi @WilliamLacy

Here is the steps to do factory reset on the unit:
    1. Navigate to Settings. ...
    2. Select "Update & security"
    3. Click Recovery in the left pane. ...
    4. Click Get started under Reset this PC.
    5. Click either "Keep my files" or "Remove everything," depending on whether you want to keep your data files intact.
If still having the same issue, then the issue might be with hardware of the unit. contact acer tech support for more assistance.
Hit Accept if its useful :)

I had exactly the same problem and this is how I fixed it. You have to force the notebook into diagnostic repair mode. hold the power button down for 5 seconds til it turns off the notebook then hold it again and restart it when you get the black screen repeat the process after the third or fourth attempt it will boot into repair diagnostic mode then follow the steps in the link below. It still wouldn't boot to safe mode for me so I selected System Restore to an earlier working date and that worked. I had a few drivers missing, sound etc and had to reinstall AMD Adrenalin but that took no time at all to fix. Good luck
https://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/enter-safe-mode-fix-windows-10-boot-loop-blue-screen-black-screen.html at step 6 click system restore instead of instead of startup settings

After I restored to an earlier date, I restarted in safe mode then uninstalled the AMD drivers using downloaded program DDU then restart back to normal mode. Next I went to AMD website for drivers and used there autodetection tool to download and install latest Radeon drivers then reboot again to normal mode and all was good. my problem was the same as yours and happened on restart after a driver update.

@andylb Thanks, I really do appreciate the answer but sadly this also didn't work for me. I tried doing what you said several times but it just goes straight to the black screen right after saying "preparing automatic repair". I've tried going into safe mode and also pressing all of the "f2" "f4" "f10" and "f12" but it always leads me right back to the same black screen. I think my computer is just screwed tbh. Thanks for the help though.

    Hello everyone
I have a Nitro 5 AN515-51. Sometimes when I start it; the windows logo  displays for a short time then the screen goes black.  The 2 led indicator lights next to the charging port are both blue since the charger is plugged in; and the 2nd indicates the computer is running. Looking closely at the black screen i can just barely make out the  small rectangle that corresponds to the login field. it is more pronounced if I shine a light onto the screen. The screen remains black when I try to activate it pressing keys or clicking the mouse.  Pressing  Fn +F6 that is suppose to turn off the screen back light has no effect.

What does work to bring the screen back is to press Fn+F4 to put the computer to sleep. Hey Pressto!!! pressing any key or clicking the mouse wakes it up and the screen has lit up . My computer is just over on year since I purchased it.

Should Acer fix this on warrentee ?

A System Restore fixed my similar problem on my Acer Nitro 5.

I had the black screen after the Acer logo right after I updated the Radeon driver. I tried the F2 F9 F10 fix but the black screen persisted. I also tried the 30-second power button hold, to no avail. I was going to Factory Reset but thought of doing System Restore first - IT WORKED!!!

I had the same problem today with my Nitro5 however on step 3

    3. Press the FN and F10 keys at the same time when the Acer logo appears on the screen. Your system should boot to a blue screen that says Choose an option.
The option that worked for  me this time was to RESTORE to an earlier time!

    Hope this helps others!

This is bad UEFI/EFI partition. I have restored a system backup I did previously and it went back to normal. Thus, as mentioned in another reply, doing a disk quick formatting and reinstalling an OS should also solve this.
