Is there any way to get surround sound out of this ancient Aspire 1830T -6651?

I don't see it in the options.  I've dug in it before, in fact replaced the motherboard, so might I be able to upgrade the audio component or would that be like a tiny chip soldered on it?

Nope, if it supported that it'd have to have more than just a headphone jack to drive the extra speakers.

If you look at the back of a desktop they usually have either three or six audio jacks. If they have six then they typically support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, if they have three they only support surround sound by multiplexing the jack to different modes depending on how you configure them. The laptops have either one port or two ports, with two being pretty unusual. The one port handles stereo output, stereo input and mic input, so stereo is as good as it gets. You can simulate something like surround sound by driving more than one speaker on each of the channels, but it's still only stereo.
