Screws for securing the Acer H6510BD on ceiling mount

Just got the Acer H6510BD.  It does not come with any screw for ceiling mount (even the user manual says it does).  Now I am having a hard time finding the right screws for securing it on the universal ceiling mount.  I have tried using 4-40 screws (I think it means 0.1 inch diameter which is the smallest I can find from the hardware store) but it still does not fit.  I don't know where else I can find something which will fit.   Can someone please shed some lights ?

Thanks

I would think that you should be looking for screws with METRIC thread. The #4-40 are SAE (US) thread.  Even if you are in the US, most large hardware stores will have metric fasteners in stock.

Thanks Leho.  I was thinking it could be the thread issue too as there is no way it takes anything smaller than 4-40 to hold the projector.  I will go check it at Home Depot again.  By the way, Acer manual said 3mm (which is 0.118 inch).  But I only see 6-32 which is 0.188 inch or 4-40 which 0.1 inch.  Which one should I get  with metric thread ?

Metric threads are a totally different thread form.  They are not the same as SAE (US) threads. Stay away from any designation such as 6-32, 4-40 etc.  Talk to one of their hosts (or whatever it is that Home Depot calls the folks that work there).  Ask for a METRIC 3mm (diameter) screw of the appropriate length.

    By the way:

3 mm metric thread has a coarse thread with a 0.5mm pitch, and a fine thread with a 0.35 mm pitch. Pitch is the distance between adjacent crests (or valleys).

    Thanks again Leho.

Do you know if I should get 0.5mm pitch or 0.35 mm pitch ?  The manual didn't say.......

I'm only guessing here.  Considering that it is a mount I would guess coarse thread ie 3mm x 0.5 .  However to be safe buy one of each, try them and then go buy the rest of the appropriate size.

    Thanks again.

Believe or not, I just went to Home Depot and Lowes, the smallest screw they have is 4mm...............   Really don't understand why Acer do not use a more common screws or simply include them in the retail package !

Common is relative. The world, save the US, is metric.  Where Acer builds their products you would have a heck of a time getting a 4-40 screw.

I suggest that you search the internet for suppliers of fasteners (metric).  Find somebody reasonably local.

Have you considered what head you want on your screws?

After all this, I do hope that the size (3mm) that Acer gave in the manual is correct.Smiley Frustrated

I know what you mean, US is the only one still using the imperial unit....

But I think Acer should just imply include 3 screws in the package.

Regarding the screw head, I notice most of the small screw comes with the small head, and I need the head to be 1 cm or bigger in order to use it with the existing universal ceiling mount.  If the 3mm screw I found comes with smaller head, I will need to put a washer or something on top.

You are right.  hope the Acer spec (3mm) is correct...

    Thanks again for your help

I found this on ebay, do you think it will fit ?  The Hexhead might actually help fitting into the universal mount.

however, it says M4 on the spec.  I remember seeing M4 when I was in Home Depot, it does not look too small though.

No. I don't think that will work.  You apparently need a M3 fastener.  The 3mm referred to in the website refers to the size of the hex (allen key) size needed to turn the screw.

I too would have expected that Acer would have included the needed screws. Have you done a thorough rummage of the packaging debris?

You are right, I think I need a M3 when Acer manual says 3mm.   Thanks for the confirmation.

Yes, I checked everything in the retail box, only a power cable, remote and battery, and a VGA cable.

Also, Acer tech has confirmed me that the manual is "generic" for several models and only order with ceiling mount with come with the screws.  So frustrating looking for screws where they can simply include for less than $1 in cost or nothing.  I wish they could just give an option to pay $5 and include them !!!

I got them from Lowes. Only one length is available though but it fits my setup.

    Hi!

rdx, could you specify the exactly what kind of screws you got from Lowes? Or does anyone else know the exact specs for the Acer H6510BD ceiling mount screws? I am from Austria and tried several screw dealers - but no luck yet.

    Any hints greatly appreaciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Markus
