Correct Cable 4k/UHD Screen Upgrade G9-793-79V5

Well, I went to install my 4k/UHD screen on my brand-new Predator 17 G9-793-79V5 laptop, and it would've gone very smoothly - I got the screen bezel off without a hitch, and that was honestly the part of the whole switch I was most worried about - but then I discovered the cable I had ordered (50.G6UN1.001) was not correct. It's WAY too short and shaped wrong. I'm guessing I actually need this 50.Q04N5.015. I found it on Newegg for $17.99, and it says it's for, among others, a G9-793 laptop (which is what I have) with UHD (4k) screen. Can anyone confirm this is the correct cable I need? Really disappointed I couldn't get that new screen installed tonight! Oh, well.

    Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

    Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

    Hi Dennis,
    The cables in your first snip belong to WLAN Antenna, I believe, in the new cable you got, one end connects to the MB, second connects to 40 pin connector on the back of the panel and the third one connects to the Camera and Mic at the top of the screen. Give it a try and let us know.

    Need some help - got this cable & disassembled my laptop to change the screen, but the new cable (which is part 50.Q04N5.015) doesn't seem right. If you look at the two attached pictures, behind my original screen is a cable that's hooked to (3) separate connectors, and that cable does not appear to be a part of my LCD cable.

    The new cable, while the LCD/motherboard connectors appear to be in the right places and the cable appears to be the proper length, it's got another cable (as you can see in the attached photo) that branches off of it, with (3) connectors that would appear to connect to the (3) connectors inside the lid, or behind the LCD. However, that part of the cable isn't the correct length to reach all (3) of those connectors.

    Is this cable correct? Am I just supposed to connect the LCD end to the screen, and the other end to the motherboard, and not worry about the portion with the (3) small connectors? What is that cable behind my original LCD, and what is it connected to?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated, as my laptop is currently sitting in pieces (I had also removed the motherboard, so I could install all four 16GB memory sticks that I had purchased), on my dining room table, and I'm sure my wife isn't too happy about that!

    Thanks - I got it figured out just before I saw your reply! My new screen is installed and seems to be working perfectly, as well as the 64GB of memory I installed, last night. Your help is much appreciated!

    Hi Dennis, I just got the same computer from Costco a few weeks ago and will love to do the 4k screen upgrade too. Where did you get the screen from and can you provide more info about the whole process?

    There are screens available all over eBay and Amazon, but you have to be careful, as I understand there are many fake/counterfeit screens out there which don't perform as well as the name-brand units do (washed-out colors, etc). I bough mine from a seller on eBay, but I contacted him first and specifically asked if his screen was a genuine AU Optronics branded screen (AU Optronics used to be Acer Display Technologies years ago, and I believe they supply the 4k screens to Acer); he replied it was, so I bought it from him. Once I got it, although it said AU Optronics on the label on the back of the screen, I really had no way for certain of knowing for sure if it was genuine or fake, other than giving it a try, and seeing how well it seemed to perform. I had no complaints with the screen until recently, when it developed some red marks, or "splotches", on it. Another person on these forums thinks it's heat-related damage (I'm a tractor-trailer driver, and it might've gotten damaged from being in the truck when it was too hot for a bit). Anyway, I had to reinstall my original, full-HD screen for the time being, but will be buying another 4k screen for it, soon.

    Replacing the screen is fairly straightforward/easy (you do have to replace the LCD cable, because the old one won't work with the 4k screen - different number of pins). Just pry (carefully) the bezel off from around the screen, then there are four screws that hold the screen to the lid. After removing them, pull the screen away to reveal the cable behind it, which you'll disconnect; remove, and replace with the new cable. Then, attach it to the new LCD; then reinstall the LCD and the bezel, and that's basically it! Hopefully, when you power it up, the screen will come on, LOL! Mine worked at first, then stopped working when I closed the lid. Luckily, it turned out that the cable pulled slightly from the LCD, so I re-routed it, and it was OK.

    Okay I know this post was since 2018. But my Acer PREDATOR 17 G9-793-79V5 screen broke was looking for a replacement, But I want a 4K screen. Instead of the 75 hz UHD screen it came with. I know my laptop has a 30 pin connector, but is there a site I can get the 4k screen and the 30 to 40 pin adapter? 
    Also with people that had success has there been any issues? Thanks!

    You'll just have to search for the screen via the part number, but you're going to run a HIGH risk of getting a fake/cheap/counterfeit unit. The first screen I bought went bad after a while - it started developing these red "splotches" all over the screen, so I had to buy another one. The 2nd time, I was lucky enough to find someone selling an OEM screen from an Alienware laptop he had (I think that's what it was; he wanted a 120Hz full-HD screen, instead). The first screen didn't actually say AU Optronics (even though I was assured by the eBay seller that it was genuine AU Optronics) on the label on the back, but my current screen says that on its label. I'm experiencing a problem now where I turn my laptop on sometimes, and I can see the screen backlight is on, but the screen is all black. I have to restart the PC to get it to work again; it doesn't do this when I have it attached to my external monitor, so I'm unsure if it's a problem with my screen; GPU, or Windows 10.

    The cable (the part number is listed above, in prior posts) I got from NewEgg. You can also try searching by the part number on Amazon or through Google.

    hey thanks man i appreciate it! ill prolly do it sometime next month when i get paid haha the 4th is up and fireworks is a must. As of right now im plugged into my MSI 140Htz monitor playing games and my laptop is just docked with a broke ***** screen my wife broke. ill give updates on it and pictures when i order and get everything shipped.     hi i understand "some" acer predator laptops in the   model G9-793 laptop range  can be upgraded from original 1080P screen to a 4kUHD by the addition of a 40 Pin cable which replaces the original 30 pin cable using acer part no 50.Q04N5.015 and an appropriate screen. would this be valid on a G9-793-775G?

    I would assume you would need the 40-pin cable referenced several times here in this thread, but be forewarned - I tried to install a 120Hz 2k screen in my Predator G9-793-79V5, and it wouldn't work, at all. The screen just wouldn't turn on when the laptop was booted up. I switched out to another screen, while the unit was powered up, and the 2nd screen would work just fine. But, when I reconnected the 2k screen, then nothing. Nada; zip, zilch. Just a black screen.

    I ended-up selling my Predator on eBay (I put the original FHD screen back in it), and I bought an Alienware 17 R5. I installed my 2k screen in that, and it works perfectly. As far as I'm aware, Acer never used this 2k screen (which is supposedly a genuine AU Optronics screen; the place I bought it from, which I believe only sells laptop screens, said it was, and the label on the back of the LCD says AU Optronics) in the Predator 17, but Dell DID use it in Alienware 17 units, so I don't know if that's got something to do with it or not. In any case, if you attempt this, then good luck. Hope it works out for you!

    your information is very valuable. Thank you for taking the time and sharing the information with all of us. Before reading this thread I was feeling lost and hopeless for upgrading the G9-793-79V5 screen from 75Hz to 144Hz, because no one makes the 17.3" screens with 30 pin eDP for 120 or 144hz refresh rate. All the screens are 40pins. 

    I did not know we can change the cable itself from 30pin to 40pin. I will order it.


    I will try upgrading this weekend. I will share my experience as I do it.
