Hello!

I recently purchased an Aspire 5 - A515-54G from a local store in Norway. With the laptop, there was also a small ziplock bag with an HDD Upgrade Kit. The bag directed me to http://go.acer.com/hddupgrade for more info. On this page, there are listed different models, but not mine. Also, there is this notice:
"Acer USA, Canada and Latin American countries allow for customers to upgrade their system without voiding the warranty."
However, I live in Europe, so I'm confused. Can I install this upgrade on my laptop, even though there is no guide for my model? And will it breach the warrenty? The local shop I puchased from, doesn't mention this upgrade at all.

Yep! The 2.5'' upgrade kit! You can use it either for a standard HDD or an SSD.

If you're in Europe you're covered as well, hell, the fact that you're given an upgrade kit should be indicative enough :)

But, improving the answer and legally speaking, since you are In Europe, the EU directive 1999/44/CE (by now integrated in each of the member states consumer protection laws) allows you to do the upgrade without losing your warranty.

It's the one that states we have 2 years of a statutory warranty, but it also regulates how things are to be in case of a failure. For example if something fails in the first 6 months it is assumed the unit had the defect by default and you have nothing to prove. Past that, you're still covered but the seller could claim that the defect was caused by some action you did that falls outside of what's considered "normal use" (as in going with a sledgehammer against it).

In any case, it's not you who needs to prove that, but the seller (if it were to reach the courts). And by prove I mean really prove, correlation is not enough. For example, stating that the screen doesn't work because you opened the bottom case to install the 2.5'' extra drive is not enough by a long shot.

You could check with Norway's consumer protection laws, but I don't think they'll be too far from that directive, if at all they would improve on it.

So if you want to add a secondary drive, go right ahead, for that model there are plastic tabs keeping the bottom panel attached to the top, I recommend starting near the power jack for example, where the Ethernet port is ;)
