Hi
Hope everyone is doing well and in good health.

I'm trying to upgrade my laptop (RAM & SSD).
Model: Acer Aspire F 15 F5-573G-759N

My questions are:
what models should I pick for both RAM(16Gb) & ssd/nvme if applicable?
if I were to upgrade the HDD to a higher size or SSD, would I lose the recovery image?
what other parts can I upgrade?

I'm planning to buy from either Amazon or Newegg since they are the only one who ship to my area.

I've uploaded both HWinfo & CPUz reports in google drive (Link below) in addition to a few photos of the laptop in case needed

Many thanks,

For the RAM, there a guide that can help you understand what you need and what the maximum for your system is I believe I even used a picture of a computer like yours in there as an example haha): https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/608352/guide-how-to-find-out-if-you-can-upgrade-the-ram-and-which-one-you-need

As for losing the recovery image, it depends on how you make the switch. Let me explain, there's an additional M.2 slot in there capable of housing M.2 drives. I wouldn't know just at this moment if NVMe drives are supported or only SATA M.2 SSDs are; but losing the recovery image is not necessarily needed.

One option when one does these sorts of things is to clone their disk, cloning means copying everything (ever partition essentially) to the new drive, so the recovery partition would also be copied and you would lose nothing. You would need to get rid of it in the HDD once the cloning is done probably but that's about it.

And a recommendation, if you opt for installing Windows anew in the SSD as opposed to cloning, keep the HDD out of there while you do the procedure. It will sabe you some hassle with the EFI partitions afterwards, this is rapidly getting into a rabbit hole so for now I'll just leave you like that (probably with more questions) but I'll detail everything better after I'm away, I just woke up for water hahaha.

    @aphanic
Thank you for your feedback and sharing the guide. The guide was very informative and had solved some of the misunderstanding that I had. I was only think of the freq. without taking in consideration the cas latency.

As per cpu(i7-6500U) info, we will have to stick to Memory Types DDR4-2133
& the supported model should follow this profile: 15-15-15-36

These are the RAMs that I found in both Amazon & Newegg, Please let me if these options are good
    • G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Laptop Memory Model F4-2133C15S-16GRS (Amazon, Newegg)
    •  Vengeance Performance Memory Kit (Amazon)

I've read in a thread that this model/different variant was supporting both NVMe SSD & SATA M.2 SSD(Link)
is there any limitation or restriction on the type/model of NVMe SSD or SATA M.2 SSD that I need to consider?

As for recovery Image, I had the assumption that the recovery is stored in the hdd but might be stored in a chip (now that I'm thinking about it, I find my latter suggestion infeasible considering the size of the image) - what is the recommended application to clone the hhd? saw that Macruim Reflect is being recommended in a few thread's in Reddit

P.S.: My apologies if my questions were bothersome.  this my 1st time trying to upgrade a laptop. so consider me as a noob :s

A lot of info here, let's try to break it down and see if I can answer some things.

First I'm glad you found the guide informative, that was its main purpose, for whose who have the time to read through it to get acquainted with their systems and how they could upgrade its memory.

And you are correct in the memory that you need to look for, if your system shipped with DDR4 that's the correct frequency for it, the other options wouldn't fit the socket. If I understood you correctly your current stick is DDR4-2133 CL15 right?

I just looked at those options you mentioned and they all seem to have matching profiles to the one you mentioned. Is that the one of the RAM you currently have? I didn't see you mentioning the one you had, but if that's it then yes, they're good candidates compatibility-wise.

I don't know about Newegg because we don't have it here (I think), but knowing Amazon allows returns I'd go there in case it didn't work.

As for the M.2 slot, I'm afraid I don't have the data to know for sure if NVMe drives are supported and at which speed (i.e. how many PCIe lanes are allocated to that slot, 2 or 4).

The info you posted from HWiNFO seems to suggest you have support for NVMe drives and that 2 lanes are associated to that port. That doesn't mean that 4x NVMe drives won't work, they will, just slower than what they're capable of. Still, I have no definite or authoritative info on the matter so I'm tagging @egydiocoelho because he may be able to tell you more about it.

Restriction-wise, barring the technology it supports I believe there's none (if you're thinking about size). You could plug a 2 TB drive in there and the machine would handle it just fine, although you'll break the bank for that probably haha.

As for recovery, you're in luck! I'm finishing another one of those informative threads, this time it's regarding backups and cloning when installing new disks.

Depending on the time I have, it will be published either today or tomorrow but I'll be sure to link you to it so you can have a look. There are many options to do backups and cloning disks, I will be using Reflect, yes; but many (most?) manufacturers provide you with a license to an Acronis' Backup re-brand to make cloning which is always another option.

And you have Clonezilla too, but that's a little too much for most users and it may be seen as unappealing.

And never apologize for asking questions, I believe curiosity should always be encouraged and if I have the time I'll be sure to be there to answer questions if I know the answer to, or just say "I'm sorry, I have no idea" if I don't.
  • On the ssd m2 2280, see that there was a user from the Portuguese community, who successfully installed a 2tb nvme in a variant of the f5-573 model, with a seventh generation processor: https://translate.google.com.br/translate?hl=pt-BR&tab=wT&sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://community.acer.com/pt/discussion/comment/714967#Comment_714967
However, note that there is another user than a variant of the model f5-573 with a sixth generation processor, but the ssd nvme, despite being recognized by windows, was not recognized in the information tab of the bios: https://translate.google.com.br/translate?hl=pt-BR&tab=wT&sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://community.acer.com/pt/discussion/588000/f5-573-521b-8gb-e-1t-os-original-win10/p1
Regarding the installation of windows, I always advise users to check out this video:

Darnit... I hadn't made a bookmark of this thread and now that I have the guide on Macrium posted I almost can't find it to point you to it @Xuran!

Here it is, I hope it'd be of help: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/610886/guide-how-to-back-up-a-system-or-clone-a-drive-with-macrium-reflect

Hi @aphanic ; sorry for the late reply, I totally missed that one since I was focusing on where and to purchase
the current installed RAM(by manufacturer) is a Kingstone ACR21D4S15HAG/8G

This week was a little bit hectic. I'll be back after work to reorganize my thoughts and recheck the other threads related to ssd m2 2280 since mine is an I7-6th Gen. @egydiocoelh, thank you for your pointing it.
    Thank you both for support

    Take care and stay safe

Hi there, If you connect to www.crucial.comand download their scanner it will tell you all about Ram upgrade and HDD to SSD upgrades available for your PC or laptop. You don't have to know anything about your system it will tell you what is available and the cost including delivery. Very helpfull site and not expensive to upgrade. I have upgraded the ram and changed the HDD to a 1TB SSD on this laptop.
