Sorry to say this but can you give me the model number of your PC?
Newer PCs have their CPU soldered directly to the motherboard.

Both of those CPU’s will work, I would go with the i7-640M with its L2 cache of 512KB and L3 cache of 4MB. The i7-640M will give you about 18% better relative performance and the i5-580M will give you 12% relative performance compared to the i3-390M, not much improvement but it’s still a bit better than what you have, also the i7-640M has a lower 18W TPD compared to the i3-390M TPD of 35W and uses less voltage and will perform cooler and faster.

What I would do is increase the RAM also and get a faster Ram as your Aspire 4745G came with either DDR3-800MHz or DDR3-1066MHz and I would increase that to a DDR3-1333MHz RAM at 8GB or 2x 4GB DDR3L-1333MHz in the 2x slots, also put a 2.5 inch SSD drive into this laptop as all these upgrades will improve your Aspire 4745G considerably. I did a similar upgrade to an Aspire 5750-2414 which is about the same vintage and it improved its performance tremendously and considerably

Below are some captions of CPUz of an Aspire 5750-2414 that came OEM with an i5-2400M CPU and 4GB DD3-1060MHz RAM and was upgraded to an i7-2720QM and upgraded from DD3-1060MHz RAM to DDR3-1333MHz, this worked 100% and improved performance greatly!
