Sure, for memory to work in X channel (X being dual, quad, etc.) they need to match. By matching we mean that they have to have the same timings (and sub-timings) at a given profile.
For example, memories that have different CAS latencies may not work in dual channel mode, or they may work at a lower speed in which they're both working with the same timing. Maybe they don't even work at all in the computer, who knows (even if memory controllers nowadays are pretty accommodating).
That's why @xapim recommends getting a matched set (I second those brands, I've had good experience with matched HyperX memory over the years, even DDR2!). One of those kits that are sold by pairs of sticks, because you're guaranteed that they'll work together in sync no matter what. You're not guaranteed they'll work in your computer of course, if there's some incompatibility for whatever reason, but if they're supported, they'll work. Otherwise it's a risk, they may very well work, they may not; many of the juicy details of the chips themselves are not available for public consumption.
Hell, I've heard of cases where someone goes and buys the same stick, twice (single packed) and it ends up not working in dual channel! It's insane!
That's why I even suggested in that guide getting the same stick as you have, second hand, it'd be the same part so you'd already know it'd work, but nothing beats a brand new set of sticks.
As for whether you can add a 16 GB stick having one of 8 GB installed, sure, you'd end up with 24 GB raw (I'm sure part would be hardware reserved) but as long as they compatible, it'll work.0 -
busu3 as i already stated above for proper dual channel u need either 2x8 or 2x16 matching exactly same size/clock/cl and preferably brand the lower the cl the better also hyperx has xmp 2.0 jedec built in it will auto boost when needed

My current one says 19-19-19-43. Will it work with this one?0

The thing is that HyperX, Vengeance and the like are normally enthusiast level stuff. They come prepared to be run at lower CAS latencies, mixing them with regular RAM may or may not work. If that stick is like mine, you'd have nothing to worry about because it shipped with several profiles at 2666 MHz (mine, that one at 2400 MHz).
See the Thaiphoon reading below:
Mine is working at CL15, but it's perfectly happy with companions at CL16, 17 and 18 as well, there are profiles to work at those other CAS latencis (if the rest of the numbers match that is). So if that's any indication of how HyperX makes their profiles, that module you linked to probably has some other alternates for running at 2400 MHz.
Check with Thaiphoon to see what your profiles currently are, to get something that is as close as possible.0 -
This is what mine says. How do I know what does the hyperx run at?
what abput this:https://www.amazon.in/HyperX-Kingston-Technology-HX426S15IB2-16/dp/B01N7K4DV4/ref=sr_1_1_mod_primary_lightning_deal?crid=3G45Q814GOSFP&dchild=1&keywords=hyperx+16gb+laptop+ram&qid=1596780566&smid=A14CZOWI0VEHLG&sprefix=hyperx+16+gb++lapt%2Caps%2C282&sr=8-10 -
Based on that screenshot you just posted the stick I have wouldn't work, because there's not a single profile in common. If you're looking to match the stick you have, you'll probably need to stay off of the enthusiast level stuff and stick to the value RAM.
To know the timings of the sticks you just have to check their specifications sheets (sometimes they're vague af, but that's what we get). You have enough information to know if it'll work more or less. Look for the part number at the manufacturer site, the primary timings for the speed it's rated at are always specified.
Timings at other specs, are generally not, just look at what Thaiphoon is able to read off the SPD chip int the RAM and what's detailed in the spec sheet of my stick: https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX426S15IB2_16.pdf
Barely anything is in there.
But if you're to match that stick, knowing it's working at 2666 MHz, you're looking for CL18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 with the other timings as Thaiphoons tells you. You'll probably see CAS, RCD, RP and RAS detailed, the rest not a chance. Hell people just go about buying a stick of X GB of RAM and don't even thing of this stuff, we're just nuts looking for compatibility and sh¡t, but it's the proper way in my opinion.
(I'd still go for a matched set, discard those 8 GB I have and sell them on eBay or something)0 -
So if I buy 2 16gb of the same thing then they would work right?0
-
I think i will go for one 16 gb stick. I think 32 is a bit too much.0

busu3 one 16 sodimm its not dual channel if u want to go 16gb only u need to get 2x8 and always buy ready sets as they were tested for that purpose depending on what you pretend to do with it 32gb might or not be much i prefer to have spare than not enough
Dual channel only works with 2 sodimms matching the exact same size/clock/CL and preferably brand as i said forget your 8gb even if youre going 16 only its manufacturer proprietary you wont be able to exactly match another 8gb with the exact specs unless you buy another used one from someone else as the oem manufacturers ram are not available for consumer

In my current ram, if i run it at a lower frequency then shouldn't it be compatible with the 16gb?0

busu3 it will work but you will never have the full performance of dual channel it will downclock to the lowest speed pf the lowest sodimm which isnt good at all as i said u need to match the sodimms exactly either 2x8 or 2x16 a single 16 wont do you any good unfortunately
