Aspire XC-703 ssd boot issue

I cloned the win 10 system to a wd 250gb ssd, ensuring that the data partition on the old HDD was removed  (empty anyway), and max space given to the system partition. Mini-disk clone went thru without a hitch.  System booted up initially without a hitch.  However in restart  BIOS says there is no boot device.  Subsequently cant boot at all even from a cold start.  However I have found that if I press F12 on the beep it will boot, and will continue to boot from a cold start (until I try restart).  I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version no difference.

Although I recognise that cloning onto smaller disks can be problematic, it does appear to be a BIOS issue - I have cloned over 100 PCs without this issue before hence my reasoning.

Anyone come across this and found a more "friendly" solution to restarts?

I think, early days, that I may have resolved this in a very round about way.

As SFC/Chkdsk didn't help, I tried fiddling with the BIOS options.  I disabled secure boot & CSM, saved and restarted - first time on restart there was no boot device. Problem appeared as before.  I went back into BIOS and restored those settings to as before.  However on rebooting I got the windows boot manager pop-up asking to select the boot system - there was only win10 to I okayed and it booted up.  From now on restart works albeit slower that a cold boot.

One might think that it was the Windows Boot Manager issue, however unlikely as it should be the same for a cold or restart.

Maybe its a combination of the two BIOS and the Windows Boot Manager - don't know enough myself to get to the bottom of this.

However I post this in case it helps others

Have you tried the set BIOS back to default ? I solved my problem this way. I have posted on July 16

How To Delete Unwanted OS From UEFI BIOS , maybe you can find some info there.

Yes did try resetting BIOS before upgrading BIOS - made no difference in this case............
  • Does the same problem occur when disconnecting the other hard drive? Can you send a capture from disk management?

Not sure I understand the point you're making, but I'll do my best to answer.
    1. The problem did not occur prior to cloning the hdd, restart worked as it should.
    2. After cloning, the old hdd was removed - no room in the XC-703 for more than one drive.  In other words after cloning one ssd and one dvd would show in the computer management admin page.
    3. As mentioned the changes I made to BIOS didn't work, but when I reversed them, hey presto the problem went away.

    Hope that answers your query.

    Thanks for yr interest.

  • Can you send some pictures of the bios settings? If windows is started when you select ssd using the f12 command, what happens when you put windows boot manager first in the bios?

First as the issue appears resolved (see post # 2) the desktop has been returned to the user - so I am unable to give you screen grabs of the various BIOS options.

What I can say is that the BIOS on the XC-703 is very very basic.  Default is Uefi with Secure boot and CSM options enabled. CSM can only be disabled if secure boot is disabled.  Note their is no "legacy" option.
As mentioned above hitting F12 after the boot beep in the case of secureboot/CSM enabled did not give any screen prompts, however what it did do was allow normal boot up to occur after a restart.

I found that by disabling secureboot/CSM made absolutely no difference to the boot up, F12 did not generate any screen options.

However after re-enabling secureboot/CSM and then hitting F!2, I did get a screen option to select boot up options. Nevertheless the only option was for the Windows Boot Manager.  since that time booting has performed normally on both cold and restarts.

In conclusion as other have found BIOS in many of the less expensive Acer PCs are very basic, and as I have found, can be problematic.

NB the XC-703 was launched in 2015 - but is a pretty basic piece of kit with a basic Celeron cpu

  • Or it could just be a bug in the bios. Do you remember which version of the bios was it?

Yes, both the original and latest/last windows BIOS version P11B4.

I came to the same conclusion - don't suppose Acer can be bothered to fix an issue on a 5 year old model.  The top end of Acer are quite good, but wouldn't touch the these low end models which are developed for a price.

    Thanks for yr continued interest.
  • I know that you have already returned the computer to the user. Now, did you convert ssd to gpt, so that it would work in uefi mode?

Mini-tool partition wizard compatible with GPT/MBR disks with either uefi or vanilla BIOS systems.  As stated previously have used this many times to clone system disks without a hitch.
