Hi, everyone.

First I can install linux on stock firmware by enable ahci (disable optane) in BIOS. And it successful.

But after upgrading to bios v.1.23 (2019/11/12), the option menu to enable AHCI disappeared from my BIOS and OPTANE is the default setting without option to disable it.

I can't install linux on optane, and no option to revert bios to enable AHCI.

Does anyone know how to revert back to stock firmware.

Please.

Regards

There's a file attached to this post that contains the previous version of the firmware available in the support page, v1.08. I have edited the platform.ini file to disable version checks so it should allow you to flash it nonetheless, the executable you need to run is H2OFFT-Wx64.exe under 64-bit Windows of course.

You can do the procedure yourself too if you wished, these are the steps:
    • Download and run an older firmware upgrade, it'll fail letting you know it's older than what you have installed (don't close this window yet).
    • Go to the %Temp% folder, the program is actually compressed and decompresses all of its contents to a folder over there. Copy that folder somewhere else, as it'll be deleted once you close the running upgrade program.
    • Then, inside of that folder you need to look for the platform.ini file, there are several definitions there that configure what the upgrade program is supposed to do and all, that's where you need to find the version check format for example and replace it all X instead; or disable version checking altogether (what I did).
    • And that's it, running the program from that folder should allow downgrading now.

     :o:o:o:o:open_mouth:

Seeing the big jump in numbers in the firmware release for the A715-74G I thought they had forgotten to put in the release notes about hiding that setting under the Ctrl+S shortcut like they did in other models. Upon pressing the combination you'd see the option once again, but apparently not for your machine...

If there's no other way, the only option would be downgrading the firmware to an earlier release where you still have the option to switch (although upgrading again may revert back to RST+Optane.

I could tell you how to allow the downgrading, but I have no idea whether it'd be safe or not in your system I'm afraid.

Plese sir, it's at my own risk.

I tried it before , but acer not allowed me to downgrade to earlier version.

And I don't remember what the previous version number too. Only remember that it's a stock firmware.

    hey @aphanic

I'm also trying to install Linux on my Aspire A715-75G, and I guess I also have to downgrade my BIOS version, will the firmware provided by you work for A715-75G?

    Thanks and Regards

Hi @gauravghati, I almost don't notice your post, I've been away for a while.

I just looked at the A715-75G, but there doesn't seem to be any firmware posted for that model in the support site. I don't know how similar the 74G and 75G are, whether they share the same firmware or not, but I wouldn't recommend flashing the firmware of a different model than the one you have (the installer generally prevents you from it anyway).

That being said, do you still need it? Do you have any previous firmware for the A715-75G that allowed you to switch to AHCI? It could probably be modified like the one for the 74G, it was just a matter of allowing downgrading to an earlier release.

Hi @gauravghati, I also had the same problem but it turns out that you will have to press ctrl + s while in main menu in BIOS to see the disabled and hidden SATA configuration. Be sure to change the windows regedit keys before changing the SATA mode in BIOS since not doing it will make your windows unbootable.

@Amey_Mahajan and @aphanic, Thanks for your reply, As Amey told I manage to change AHCI mode by pressing ctrl+s in the main menu BIOS and it works.
