Hi, I having trouble to make my secondary display working, my computer is running Ubnutu 20.04.

I've also different questions :
First, the computer comes with an intel graphics chip and a Nvidia GPU, so is the HDMI connected (or the display manged by) to Intel or Nvidia ?
To have more chances to get the monitor working, should I use Xorg or Wayland ?

To have more info about the configuration see my askubuntu post : https://askubuntu.com/questions/1252268/ubuntu-20-04-laptop-second-display-not-working

  • Does the same problem occur when you disable secureboot, creating a password in the setsupervisorpassword of the bios?

Just tried with my Nirto 5 AMD version and KUbuntu 20.04, KDE plasma 5.18.5, using Xorg and  Kernel 5.7.6 and everything is working fine, usually the HDMI port is served by the dedicated graphics (you can try when you reboot and you will be not able to see POST on the external monitor). Maybe the monitor is not accepting what you are trying to feed it. Try with system settings and look what are the supported res. and freqs. of the monitor. Pressing Fn+F5 will bring up a menu to chose try with it as well.

  • There was a user with a similar problem, who said he solved the problem by disabling secure bios in linux.

The monitor isn't detected in system settings as well by xrandr.
The only moment where it works is during boot (when acer logo is showed before arriving on log screen) and it works when I unplug and plug back the HDMI manually.

So I've tested, it still not working but now dmesg outputs many times this line :
[   10.489642] [drm] Got built-in EDID base block and 0 extensions from "edid/1920x1080.bin" for connector "HDMI-A-1"

Find this file and put it in to lib/firmware/edid/. Or better try with hdmi to dp cable or hdmi to dvi

I've tried with an other screen, the issue remains
The screens have only a HDMI or VGA port so I can't test with DVI or DP

    If I run these commands
    1. xrandr --newmode "Mode-0" 138.70 1920 1968 2000 2080 1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync
    2. xrandr --addmode HDMI-1-1 Mode-0
    3. xrandr --output HDMI-1-1 --mode Mode-0 --pos 1920x0
The monitor stop saying no signal and I can drag windows on the screen, but it's very bugy as you can see

-vsync come from the preferred mode of the monitor when I run 'sudo get-edid | parse-edid'

I can't my computer have an HDMI and a DP, but the montior have only an HDMI

Ok, so I've tested on a ubuntu 19.10 live and I can achieve the second monitor to works if I restart X with the intel driver : xorg.conf
If I do that I need to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back and only after all these steps the monitor works perfectly

EDIT : These steps no longer works on my current install of Ubuntu 20.04
