Did this happen all of a sudden for no apparent reason? Jack E/NJ

Press and hold the power key till the machine shuts off. Then press and hold the F2 key. While still holding F2, press the power button to enter the BIOS menu. Does the HDD show up in both the INFORMATION & BOOT tabs? Jack E/NJ

Yes. Looks good in the BIOS menu. Press F10 to save the BIOS settings and exit. If it still is stuck after exiting the BIOS menu, shut the machine down again. Then press and hold the ALT+F10 keys. While still holding ALT+F10, turn the machine back on. Does a recovery screen appear? Jack E/NJ

Turn the machine off again by pressing and holding the power button. Then press and hold the F2 key again. Then while still holding the F2 key, turn the machine back on. Go to the BIOS Main tab. Are the D2D and F12 options both turned on? If not, turn them both on, Press F10 again to save settings and exit. Then shut the machine off again. And retry the ALT+F10 cold boot recovery. Give it some more time. An hour or so. If nothing happens, then it may suggest the Toshiba is biting the dust. Jack E/NJ

Just to let you know you were right. It was mechanical, nothing you could have done to fix it.  Sorry to have bothered you and thank you for your help.

Thanks for report.  Large capacity HDDs & SSDs are pretty cheap these days. Less than $50 for a 1TB HDD. And you can probably still get personal data off the old Toshiba by attaching it to a USB port with $10 USB-to-HDD cable. Jack E/NJ
