Are these metal shells on the two m.2 NVMe slots used for heatsink? (Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54)

Hi guys!
I bought a Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54 a year ago. My space has been filled up quickly. I'm planning to get a new M.2 NVMe SSD for a storage upgrade. When I opened the back case and found the 2 M.2 slots, I saw there is a metal shell on each of the slots. Does anyone know what the two metal shells are used for? Are they built for a heatsink for the SSDs? Can I take them off?

    Hi,
They are some sort of heat shields, you can leave them as it is, you can also use the SSD without them but keep an eye on the temperatures, if the temperatures go up, reinstall the metal covers.

I think the stock ones are slick idea but they need to be modified for different pattern with other NVME.  Example in photos.

The base on the back side of the access enclosure with the set screw is begging for an aftermarket improved heatsink design in copper or aluminum with some fins or a heat pipe coming out into some fins possibly.  Lots of options for improvement with the heat sink design.

The heat sink trimmed up for SK Hynix P31 NVME 500GB.
