Nitro n50-600 computer problem. Need help identifying the issue.

New VR ready system. 

A minute after the system boots up, the screen gets "red artifacts", and looks like a checkered pattern. Then the system freezes. Then the screen goes black, and then the screen comes back on and everything works normally. Then it usually happens again after a few seconds. Then the computer works properly. Sometimes it happens again after 10 minutes or so.

I have tried re-installing and using different video drivers. 
I have not overclocked anything.
I have tried updating windows.
I have tried a different monitor.
I have checked the temperatures of the system components.
I have tried changing the RAM chips.

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be the problem?

Bad video card?
Bad CPU?

Or?

  • Does the same problem occur when connecting another hdmi or dp cable?

    I will try using the HDMI connection on the video card, rather than the DP connection.

    Today the screen problem happened 5 or 6 times in less than an hour. I switched from DP to HDMI as egydiocoelho suggested, and so far so good. I will have to give it a day or so to be sure, but this may have solved the problem. Unfortunately my card only has one HDMI port, which I need for VR.

    Anyway, if the different port solved the problem, then what? Does this mean I have a bad video card that wont work properly on DP?

    The VR system is an HTC Vive. The problem did not go away when the HTC Vive is disconnected from the computer.

    The glitch has never been seen on the HTC Vive screens (HDMI). It only seems to happen on a monitor when the monitor is hooked up through a display port.
  • OK! But when you disconnect VIVE and keep the monitor still connected to the DP port, does the problem still occur?

    I believe that the problem is still there with the Vive disconnected, but I will re-run that specific test to confirm. The problem is somewhat random, and doesn't always happen - so it may take 10 minutes to test or a few days. Sometimes it happens 5 times in a hour, sometimes not once the whole day. For some reason it mostly happens right after the computer is booted up in the morning when its still "cold".
  • Check if disabling fast startup in the power options and fastboot in the bios, if it solves the problem.

    Confirmed: Problem persists, even with the HTC Vive completely disconnected form the tower.

    Update: Its 100% video, and not system wide. I was watching a video, and the audio kept going while the video glitched out. Also, this happened on HDMI, not DP. So all video outputs from the card are effected.

    GPU Usage spikes to 100% during the glitch, then usage returns to normal.
  • Can you inform the model of the desktop? example N50-600G-EW11
    What is the version of the bios? Also, does the same problem occur when you update drivers on the intel and nvidia websites?

    I spent a lot of time messing with drivers and updates to solve the problem.

    How do I check the bios version?

         The links describe problems, but mainly during gaming.

         My issue happens while I'm NOT gaming.

         Red boxes, computer freezes, screen goes black, screen comes back on and works properly.

         The red boxes look similar to these:

    Update.

    A warning is displayed on the screen.
    Then the screen flickered a new pattern, which has not happened before.
    Then monitor went on and off an bunch, showing black screen each time.
    Then the PC restarted itself.
    Showed some "did not shut down cleanly" info
    Now its working normally.

    The error before the shutdown/crash said:

    DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET ("the device failed due to a badly formed command."), GPU: "Radeon RX 580 Series" Driver 26.20.15019.19000 2/27/20202 5:00:00 PM

    None of these specific symptoms has happened before. May be unrelated to other issue.
