Like so many other posts I've seen, i my slightly less than 2yr old Aspire 5 has suffered the dreaded left hinge failure. I started noticing the left hinge/bezel felt "loose", and then the bezel cracked just below the screen above the left hinge. Now opening the laptop screen requires great care or the whole bezel detaches from the frame
and even the led starts to move.  I thought it must be a screw loose or something, so i  looked more closely, and the actual aluminum frame broke between the hinge and LCD frame just behind the screw. Talk about poor design.  Pictures below.

I've done plenty of screen replacements/repairs before, so I'm hoping this one is straight forward.   I think I've found replacement frame/hinge parts for about $20 on Amazon. Has anyone had this same defect or done this repair before?

Refer to the posts you've already seen. Some have used two part epoxy to repair/prevent further damage from wear and tear of constantly opening and closing the lid. Jack E/NJ

I've seen a lot of hinge/case failure posts, but didn't see one where the metal frame actually snapped near the screw. Most of those posts ended with 'we sent you a PM to discuss things offline'.  Anyway, LCD replacement appears to actually be pretty straightforward. Hoping frame replacement isn't much more problematic. Amazon should have it here in a week.  I might reinforce with epoxy or a shim if I can find something appropriate sitting around.

The break is usually due to plastic cracking, not the metal frame itself. So an epoxy like JBWeld might be all that's required.  Jack E/NJ

Yeah, that's why I was surprised to see the broken metal frame in mine.  Have the JBWeld on standby :)

So there's the culprit. The three plastic left hinge screw mounts cracked from the back shell as others have reported. That probably put all the flex strain on the metal frame, which snapped just above the screw mounts before breaking the bezel. I've beard mixed reviews on success of epoxy holding the broken threaded insert nuts in in place. Will give it a try and hope I don't have to replace the whole shell.
