Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-43) replacement hdd not running properly (cannot determine why)

hello everyone! I am in need of assistance because of a very strange problem I cannot diagnose. So, for context, my laptop (Acer Nitro 5 AN515-43) took a bad hit and the mechanical drive died. So, I was able to get a replacement drive (same size 1tb mechanical but it's a seagate barracuda) but something weird happens. The new drive can be read by device manager (unallocated) but whenever I try to format it it just stops, like, formatting does not progress at all (I checked and I had it on quick format). When I use chkdsk /f either it hangs or give me and error saying I have no access to the disk. Now, I took out the hdd and tried to access it using a sata to usb adaptor and for some reason I was able to successfully format the drive no problems. I tested the new drive by loading a video (by sata to usb) and playing it back (while inside the laptop). At first, it worked (playback successful) and Origin was even able to write on it (I tried downloading BF1942 and I was even able to play a quick match). I closed the game and checked if I can download another game and then it's the same old behavior. It stopped again. To double check I restarted Origin and the game just won't download (0% progress) and I tried playback of the video I previously loaded on the hard drive and it won't play back anymore. The drive is spinning during boot up I can hear it (no clicking just the usual sound). But when I put the drive back inside the laptop and do a disk check it does show up in file explorer but scanning the disk somehow stops it again. I used two software tools already to check if there are problems with the hard drive (no errors found) and tried uninstalling the hdd driver and rebooting but this did not do anything. What makes this even weirder is that I installed an old-*****$ hdd from my previous laptop of 5 years (500gb WD blue) and it works without any problems! I honestly do not know how. Could anyone here be so kind to explain how is all of this possible and what could be the problem? Do you think it is a compatibility or power issue? I checked if the SATA connection was dirty but I think there is nothing wrong with it (the old hdd works) and the new hdd seems fine (at least from diagnostic tools and because it works outside the laptop using a SATA to USB adapter) not to mention I did a visual inspection of the motherboard and nothing seems to be out of place but somehow the new hdd is unusable inside the new laptop. I have included screencaps that might help if things are not so clear. (all diagnostics are for the new hdd which is a 1tb seagate barracuda) Thanks!

  • What is the exact model of hdd? What happens when you change the sata mode in the bios to ahci. You must enable safe boot first.

@egydiocoelho AMD models are set for AHCI by default and I was not able tho change it so there is no other option.

@egydiocoelho ok so you think the laptop was set to IDE/RAID by default? Because my laptop shipped with an ssd/hdd combo out of the box and I would think that it is set to AHCI like what @batmalin said. Also I do not know if I mentioned clearly but the new hard drive would work for like, 5 minutes then would stop without warning.

The service manual for that model shows this, but it is likely that are referring to model a515--43 and not an515-43:

It would be interesting to know if pressing ctrl + s in the bios, if the sata mode function appears.

  • Now, about the problem of the user @jedbar, it would be interesting to know if the same problem occurs when disconnecting the sata cable from the motherboard.

@egydiocoelho the laptop is an AN515-43 (AMD Ryzen 5). Okay I can at least try if I can toggle settings in the bios. @batmalin is there then an explanation as to why the older hard drive the WD blue worked? (it is plugged right now and its still running) thanks!

Most probably you got fauty hdd from Acer  or the fw of the hdd have a bug, both ways I would contact Acer for replacement. Friendly advise - do not ever sign any return docs without testing the repair.

I got inside bios and yes you were right @batmalin SATA mode cannot be toggled (fixed to AHCI). also I did not get the replacement hdd from Acer (because I bought it outside my country of residence and also because we are all in quarantine right now so getting serviced is tricky and it is obvious that the laptop suffered superficial damage from the hit I referred to in the OP which probably means I just voided the warranty). I bought the hdd from a physical shop where I live and I have the receipts (just bought it early this week) so maybe I can replace the hdd with another one of their stock and see if it works. Pretty bad luck if it is the case that I burned through two faulty hard drives in a row.

EDIT: @egydiocoelho what do you mean disconnecting the SATA cable? at some point I really thought that was the problem because again the new hdd works when plugged via sata to usb externally.
  • About the sata cable, I mean this here:

@egydiocoelho do you mean this connection? (FFC 12 pin) like take it out and use another cable? @batmalin yes it makes sense but it works with the old WD blue so idk.

So to summarize just in case we get lost:
new hdd (seagate) stops working unpredictably when connected to sata
new hdd (seagate) works fine when connected to an external usb to sata cable
BUT an older hdd (wd blue) works fine when connected to the same sata
laptop cannot switch sata mode (only AHCI)
  • check this video in 01:35:
    https://youtu.be/DfZLeuRHOrY
He pushes the black pin down to fit the cable. The reverse should occur to remove the cable, but do so with caution. Have you checked if there is any firmware for the hdd?

Hi! sorry I had work so I was too busy to check on the hdd until now. To answer @egydiocoelho I used the utility to check for the firmware of the hdd and it gave me this:

is this the expected result? Thanks.
  • Did you install the seagate hard drive to check if any firmware is available? In the seagate tool, only the western digital hdd appears.

ok stupid mistake yes that is the WD. But the seagate is connected right now via SATA to USB and the drive is not showing up in the seagate tool. That's strange right? The seagate is outside the laptop plugged via USB and is spinning just fine (I am eliminating all possible scenarios when the drive does not work).

EDIT: ok it stopped spinning. I also checked on the seagate website itself (searching via serial number) that this particular drive does not have new firmware available.

If the issue is indeed the firmware, is there a way to idk reinstall the firmware in the hdd? I went to the seagate website support and there is no option to download any firmware whenever I search for the hdd's serial number. Also like I said it does not show up in the utility.
  • Can you still exchange the hard drive with the seller?
