  • Weird. This was what should have happened, since it has the .wim image:

in this case, the only solution is to actually purchase the site recovery, when it becomes available.

I got a new set of USB drives specifically for recovery drives. I am going through the formatting process on another computer (not the Acer in question). The only FAT option I have is exFAT (or NTFS).

    Does exFAT work?

I went through the cleaning process in the command prompt, created the primary partition, then tried 3 different methods to format.
    1. I went back through disk management in windows and tried to create the format, however it didn't let me select FAT32 (only exFAT or NTFS) in the format option in disk management.
    2. So I deleted the primary partition (that was created in command prompt) while in disk management, then built a new partition with the Disk Management tool. In that partition creation it gave me the option to format there as well - with only the same 2 exFAT or NTFS options.
    3. When the partition is created (either in Disk Management or in Command Prompt) there is a message that comes up that the device needs to be formatted to work. If I follow that I get to the usual "format" option as if you right click on the drive letter in Computer to open the options. The only 2 options are the same - exFAT and NTFS.

So if exFAT won't work well for the backup drive, is there a command in Command Prompt that I can use to force to FAT32 to bypass the options that the computer is giving me?

Command Prompt did allow me to convert to GPT and create the primary partition, I just can't get to the FAT32 quick format - only exFAT or NTFS on this computer.
  • It appears that some newer computer models accept booting by exfat. Are you trying to format the USB drives you purchased or the hard drive? If you want to format in fat32, you must decrease the partition size like this:
create partition primary size=xxxxx (x in MB)
