Hello everyone,

Recently I just bought Acer Nitro 5(AN515-52-51T2). The specs are as below:
  • Intel Core i5 8300H
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • NVidia GEForce GTX 1050
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1 TB HDD (HGST HTS721010A9E630(ATA)), look --> ATA, I don't know whether this is normal or not for Nitro 5 to get ATA, please put your reply if this is not common.
Right after I received the laptop (2 days ago), I did a minimum setup for me and then I noticed that the disk usage is always around 98%-100%.
Here is what I mean by "minimum setup" (before I noticed that ***** 100%):
  1. Finish my Windows 10 Setup (account, etc)
  2. Installing Google Chrome
  3. Creating Restore Point
  4. Partition the disk drive (I only use 1 TB original HDD)
So, after those steps, I am trying to noted how long my Laptop get into the windows and ready to use. And I am surprised that after I logged in (type password) it took around 4-5 minutes before I can open windows explorer normally (meaning I click on the icon, and then 1-3 seconds later it will popup).
Then I got suspicious, and checked on the disk usage. Surprise mofo~~~!! 100% disk usage!
What I did before doing search:
  1. SFC /scannow
  2. Disk Defrag
  3. Check HDD using this tool: https://downloads.wdc.com/windlg/WinDlg_v1_37.zip
  4. Clean Boot
  5. Boot Safe Mode
Everything seems fine when I did those. The result are OK, nothing bad, nothing broken. So I think my HDD physically OK(duuhh, this is a brand new laptop with 2 days history usage!)
But, note for Clean Boot is I still see 100% usage during Startup.

So then during my search on the magnificent Google, I found these videos:
  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWESrvP_uU8
  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enh3gPc3HV
Basically both are telling me 99% the same thing. Somehow it works for me by disabling Windows Search and SuperFetch (now is SysMain).
But the problem is not gone! I still see disk usage randomly went up to 100% during:
  • Startup (I only have these on my startup)
  • Anytime opening any apps, like Steam, MS Office, Google Chrome(have many tabs)
  • Watching video using VLC for 64bit
  • Doing nothing! For God's sake! Just idle!
It's quite bothersome! Anyone know how to solve this?
As for anyone who suggest me to replace the HDD with SSD, well, fyi, this might also happen on it. So, SSD is not a solution in here!

Thank you
Sorry for the long read!

It is most likely a failing hard drive, what I can recommend is either replacing the hard drive or getting an SSD because that WILL fix the problem (unless you get a cheap DRAMless SSD) and the SSD is much, much faster.

Jey, I forgot where because I tried a lot of disk/storage apps before. But now after I use the "correct" one I saw it detected as SATA.
    So, it's SATA... :astonished:

Do you mean the hardware failure? Well, I don't know how to check it but here is the result from speed test using Crystal Disk.

Well, SSD might solve the issue if it's HDD speed issue. BUt if not, the issue still linger there, but it won't as bad as it was. Still not a solution for everyone especially the one with limited budget :astonished:

When I am idle? From what I remember on the peak it will be randomly: MsMpEng.exe, svchost.exe, system

I am wondering whether this is a Win10 Home issue,..is it possible?

It is possible because  windows is downloading and installing updates in the background especially when idle.
