At power on, keyboard back light flashes - nothing on screen.
Any ideas on possible causes and remedies greatly appreciated.

Press and hold power button for about 5 seconds till machine completely shuts off. Remove charger. Gently insert paperclip into battery reset pinhole on bottom cover for about 10 seconds. Let battery rest for 15 minutes. Plug charger back in. Wait until charge LED changes from orange to blue. Then turn machine back on . Jack E/NJ

Very much appreciate your feedback.    As it happens, found info on the battery reset pinhole 'after' I posted my initial request for assistance.   Did try it earlier without success ... but lacked your guidance re duration of reset step, battery rest time, etc.    Tried it in accord with your specific recommendations  - unfortunately still the same outcome.

I did note and follow that instruction.    The battery charge light was immediately blue (unless I missed a flash of orange) when I connected the AC.

(Sorry for the slow response.   Was out of town today servicing an essential services client need.)

    >>>The battery charge light was immediately blue>>>

Press and hold the power button again for about 5 seconds. Then remove the charger. Then press the power button again to try to turn the machine on. What happens without the charger plugged in? Jack E/NJ

After the KB flashes, does the power LED stay lit on battery alone? Jack E/NJ

    - Power on with battery alone
    - KB flashes

Then follows a repetitive sequence of events:
    - power light goes out after 1 to 2 seconds
    - power light comes back on / keyboard flashes
    - .... and repeat

Your system seems to be stuck in hibernation mode. Remove the charger again. Press and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds to make sure system is completely turned off. Then insert, press &  hold paperclip into battery reset pinhole again. While still holding the paperclip in the pinhole, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. No lights or KB light activity must be visible during this 30 seconds.

After 30 seconds, re-insert the charger. Wait for the blue charge light. Then try to turn the system on again.

Thanks for your patience and persistence in trying to help me resolve this challenge.

Followed your instructions ... in fact did the whole process twice just to be sure.

    - 30 seconds - pinhole/power button/no lights or kb back light - check
    - reconnected AC - took approx 18 to 20 minutes to blue charge light
    - system back on - same outcomes / pattern as before

Press and hold power button till machine shuts off. Press and hold the F2 key. While still holding the F2 key, press the power button to turn the machine back on. Don't let go of the F2 key. What happens? Jack E/NJ

Had tried that before my original post ... and did it again just now.

Outcomes in both cases - same pattern of intermittent KB back light.

Not good. Gotta open it up to remove the battery pack and try to reset the BIOS. Are you game? Is the machine still under warranty? Jack E/NJ

Unit was purchased 15 months ago ... hence no longer under warranty.

Have negligible experience 'under the hood' of a laptop.    However, if you have the specific knowledge, patience and opportunity to provide guidance, I am game ... and appreciative.

First remove one screw each from the RAM and HDD doors shown below. Lift the doors out. Then remove 4 screws holding the HDD cradle inside. Lift and grab the HDD and cradle and pull its cable connector out --- might have to wiggle/rock it a bit while pulling to get it free. Then remove 17 screws on base cover and pry the back off with a credit card wedge starting near the upper left corner near the screen and working your way around to the other side. You'll probably break off a few plastic hooks but nothing that 17 screws can't handle when you button it back up.

Remove tape securing the battery pack cables and pull its connector off the mainboard. Then remove two battery screws and lift the battery pack out. Then look for the BIOS CMOS coin cell, remove tape from cables, and also pull its connector off the mainboard. Then short its two pins connectors on the mainboard with a screwdrivee to discharge the BIOS chip. Shorting for about 10 seconds should do it. Then for good measure, press and hold the power button for another 30 seconds.

Reconnect the coin, battery pack and button it back up. Make sure all the base cover screws are firmly tightened so that a springloaded normally off mainboard safety switch located near the RAM slot is pressed firmly in the on position by the base cover. Jack E/NJ

Amazing set of instructions - thank you.

I have to acquire (or borrow) a suitable screwdriver (set?) to pursue these instructions.    Shall get back to you as soon as I have that opportunity.

Was able to borrow a screwdriver set and followed the instructions you provided carefully.   Having buttoned up the machine I applied AC power, noted the blue status light and powered the machine on.   Sad to report, same repetitive cycle outcomes as before.
